WASHINGTON TOWNSHIP – The Franklin County Coroner's Office on Sunday released the names of the five people who were killed in a crash Saturday involving two motorcycles and an SUV.
Marjorie S. Smith, 68, of Johnstown; Douglas M. Hoffer Jr., 32, of Quarryville; Colleen E. Nesbitt, 27, of Gap; David A. Russell, 67, of Mount Joy; and Michelle G. Russell, 53, of Mount Joy, were all pronounced dead following the crash on the Fort Ritchie Access Road in Washington Township.
Franklin County Coroner Jeffrey Conner ruled the nature of the deaths accidental.
According to the coroner's office, Smith was driving north in a 2006 Toyota SUV around 2 p.m. Saturday.
For unknown reasons, her vehicle crossed the center line, and hit a 2009 Harley-Davidson motorcycle head on. Hoffer was operating the motorcycle with Nesbitt as a passenger.
Authorities said upon impact, the SUV spun counterclockwise, and was struck broadside in the passenger door by the second motorcycle – a 1999 Suzuki, operated by David Russell. Michelle Russell was a passenger in that vehicle.
All five were pronounced dead at the scene.
Autopsies are scheduled for Monday.
LUCEDALE, Mississippi -- A traffic stop Wednesday night resulted in the arrests of three individuals, according to a news release from the George County Sheriff's Office.
According to Sgt. Jason Pharez, deputies spotted a white Isuzu Rodeo headed south on Highway 198 was weaving and a traffic stop was initiated. There were several individuals in the vehicle, including some known felons.
According to FBI Safe Streets Task Force member Sgt. Trey Collins, arrested were Rocky Edward Lee, 29, of Steve Huff Road, Joey Preston Mills, 28, of Brushy Creek Road, and Tamatha Patricia Jelsma, 28, of Highway 198 East. All three are from George County.
The suspects were also in possession of firearms. Lee is a convicted felony is not allowed to have possession of firearms. Also found in the vehicle were spice, paraphernalia, and beer. Seized in the arrest were two handguns, clips, and a rifle. All were loaded.
Lee was arrested for possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, and possession of spice.
Mills was arrested on outstanding warrant for failure to pay. He goes to trial in circuit court next month on other charges.
Jelsman was arrested for possession of alcohol in a dry county.
With regard to the discussion of the spring bear hunt I have a few comments to make.
First, as a hunter and outdoorsman all my life I find it appalling that anyone would condone the cruel and mindless practice of baiting. In order to attract the bears these individuals create a miniature garbage dump. They then sit in their tree stands and wait for the bears to arrive. Bear baiting has nothing to do with sport hunting; instead, it is an obscene and grotesque practice.
Secondly, when a mother bear is killed in the spring, the cubs cannot survive since they cannot fend for themselves. Would these so-called hunters condone a moose or deer spring hunt where the calves and fawns would also perish? Anyone who thinks that this is a good idea should be ashamed of themselves.
The banishment of the spring bear hunt was more than a good idea because it made common sense then just as it makes common sense now.

A man who killed eight members of the same family in an arson attack has gone on the run from prison.
Shakeil Shazad, 33, was sentenced to 18 years in prison in 2003 for his part in the blaze in Huddersfield.
Derbyshire police said Shazad was released from category D Sudbury prison, near Uttoxeter, on Wednesday on a work licence.
The force said he was "now unlawfully at large". A spokesman said: "He has connections in Huddersfield, West Yorkshire. Anyone with any information about the whereabouts of this man is asked not to approach him but to immediately contact their local police or Crimestoppers anonymously 0800 555111."
Seven members of the Chishti family – Muhammad Ateeq-ur-Rehman, 18, Nefeesa Aziz, 35, Tayyaba Batool, 13, Rabiah Batool, 10, Ateeqa Nawaz, five, Aneesa Nawaz, two, and six-month-old Najeeba Nawaz – died in the fire in May 2002.
Another family member, Zaib-un-Nisa, 54, died in hospital a week later.
Three men – Shazad, Shaied Iqbal and Nasar Hussain – were convicted for their part in the crime. A fourth man, Shaid Mohammed, was arrested by police after the blaze but went on the run and has never been captured.
Shazad is Asian, 5ft 6in, with short black hair, a black beard and brown eyes.
