The 22-year-old young man, Christopher Lane, was found dead in the small town of Duncan, Oklahoma, while visiting his girlfriend. The police chief said that Lane, a baseball player at an Oklahoma college, was shot while jogging past a home where three teenage boys were staying. They added that the shooting of the Australian student was a completely random act of violence.
Already, the event has been used by conservative pundits, who have complained that civil rights activists such as the Rev. Al Sharpton and the Rev. Jesse Jackson operate under a double standard, since they have called for no protests in this episode where the victim is white and two of the three assailants are African-American. They complain that the civil rights community was quick to condemn George Zimmerman in the shooting of Trayvon Martin and not the three teenagers in the killing of Christopher Lane.
There are some stark differences. In the Oklahoma case, the suspects were apprehended quickly, unlike Zimmerman, who walked as a free man for weeks after the death of Trayvon Martin. In fact, James Francis Edwards Jr., 15, and Chancey Allen Luna, 16, were quickly charged with murder. The third teenager, Michael Dewayne Jones, 17, was charged with being an accessory to murder after the fact and with firing a weapon. All were charged as adults, according to the Stephens County District Attorney's Office.

The city police crime branch has arrested a 31-year old computer tutor from Karnataka for allegedly harassing leading film actresses, models and businesswomen by sending them obscene messages on their cellphones. The probe revealed that the accused had victimised more than 30 such women across the country over the period of six months, sources said.
The arrested accused has been identified as Harish Padmanabha Bhatt, a resident of Kalinga, Udipi, Karnataka. Bhatt is a diploma holder in computers and had worked as computer tutor in the past. The police has seized a laptop, a dual Sim card cellphone, two Sim cards, and an MTS data card that he allegedly used in committing the offence.
The police initiated an initial probe in the matter after the joint commissioner of police (crime) received some complaints from a few film actresses, models and businesswomen.
After one of the victims approached the Nehru Nagar police and lodged an offence under Sections 509 (word, gesture or act intended to insult the modesty of a woman) of the IPC and relevant sections of the IT Act in this regard, the crime branch unit-8 was handed over the investigation of the case. A team of policemen comprising PI Deepak Phatangre, Jyotsna Rasam, API Sanjay More and others, then recently succeeded in nabbing the accused, who was later identified as Bhatt.
"He said that he got the cellphone numbers from some Internet websites. He would then send them lewd text messages in the night using Chinese handsets," said a crime branch officer, who is part of the investigation team.

OTTAWA – Police have identified all six people killed in Wednesday's deadly level-crossing crash between a city bus and a Via Rail train.
They are Michael Bleakney, 57, Connor Boyd, 21, Karen Krzyzewski, 53, Kyle Nash, 21, Rob More, 35, and Dave Woodard, the 45-year-old bus driver.
Meanwhile, Transportation Safety Board investigators recovered data recorders from the bus and locomotive involved in the accident.
A board spokeswoman says the agency will have to get help dealing with the recorder from the double-decker OC Transpo bus because it doesn't normally deal with bus accidents.
"The one on the bus we are not used to," said Julie Leroux.
The board has said it may take months to unravel why the driver drove the crowded bus through a lowered safety barrier and ran into the train just outside a Via station in the western suburbs.
Rail crews worked overnight to get the Via Rail passenger train back on the tracks.
The crash, which ripped the front off the bus, occurred at a level crossing on a transitway dedicated to bus traffic.
Witnesses said the bus didn't stop as lights flashed, bells rang and safety barriers dropped across the road at the approach of the train, which was slowing for a station stop.
Passengers on the bus frantically shouted "Stop! Stop!" seconds before the impact.
Colleagues have described the bus driver as conscientious and a good workmate.
Rob Johnston, lead investigator for the safety board, said work on the site may continue into Friday.

Unsatisfied with the police action, some people gathered near the police station in Azara and demanded that they be given custody of the four detained people, the police officer said.
Some local people alleged that the four had gang-raped the girls and killed them on Tuesday night.
The people pelted stones at policemen and the police forcibly dispersed the crowd by wielding their lathis (bamboo sticks).
"We have detained the four, and investigations are on. One detained person confessed that he picked up the two girls Tuesday night and informed his friends, Gopal Das, Apurba Boro and Nripen Das. They had a party at the house of one Rudra Das at Bongara area," the police officer said.
"The detained person also confessed that he met with an accident the same night when he came to drop the girls. While one of the girls died on the spot, the second girl received severe injuries. However, he got scared and dumped the dead girl and the one with severe injuries near the railway tracks and escaped," the SSP said, adding that it is difficult to reconstruct the whole incident based on one confession.
"A crime has been committed. But we are not sure whether they were raped and murdered or whether it was an accident. People have alleged rape, but I cannot confirm this at this moment as we are yet to receive the post-mortem report of the two deceased," Tiwary said.
2 Rahway men arrested on drugs, weapons charges - NJ.com
LINDEN — Two Rahway men were arrested this weekend after police found a loaded gun and 10 bags of marijuana in their car, authorities said today.
Linden narcotics squad officers were staking out the parking lot of Aviation Plaza on Routes 1&9 just before 9 p.m. Friday when they spotted what appeared to be a drug deal between two vehicles near the Marshalls store, police spokesman Capt. James Sarnicki said.
The detectives followed a Chevy Trailblazer occupied by Jared Deshawn Daniels and Alkabir Ishmel Boone, both 25 and from Rahway, as the SUV swerved erratically through traffic northbound down Routes 1&9, Sarnicki said.
When officers finally pulled the car over at Franklin Street and 5th Avenue in Elizabeth, they spotted a handgun on the floor of the vehicle and removed both men, police said.
The handgun was a Charter Arms .38-caliber special loaded with two rounds, Sarnicki said. Officers also recovered a sandwich bag containing 10 smaller baggies of suspected marijuana, he said.
Both men were arrested and charged with possession and distribution of marijuana, possession of a firearm while committing a controlled dangerous substance offense, and certain persons not to possess weapons.
The driver, Daniels, was also charged with possession of a CDS in a motor vehicle and having an open container of alcohol. Daniels was held on $150,000 bail and Boone held on $100,000 bail, and they were taken to the Union County Jail with a court date set for Friday.
