KARACHI: Fourteen people, including four law enforcement personnel and three Pakistan People's Party (PPP) workers, were gunned down in different parts of the city on Thursday. Others killed were targeted either on sectarian ground or because they refused to pay extortion money.
Federal Constabulary (FC) personnel Muhammad Abdul Malik, 25, and his friend Nazar Gul received bullet wounds when unidentified attackersboth of them snatched their official weapons and managed to flee. After the incident, the area police rushed to the spot and took both the injured cops to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital. However, Mahar Ali breathed his last on way to hospital. The police seized empty shells of 9mm pistol from the scene for forensic test.
Head Constable Ali Hussain, 35, and Constable Akmal, 32, were gunned down by two armed men riding a motorcycle near the Eshanabad Kiosk in Sohrab Goth police jurisdiction, while they were checking vehicles. The attackers managed to flee. Other cops sitting in the kiosk immediately took the bodies to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital. SHO Sohrab Goth Fasi Zaman told The News that both the deceased received five bullets each. Talking to The News, DIG East Shahid Hayat said that about 90 policemen were gunned down this year.

The victims were sitting at a local hotel at the time of the attack. Police reached the spot and took both the injured to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital, where they breathed their last.
In the Mominabad police limits, Zeeshan, 25, was shot dead and his cousin Younus, 27, was injured by unidentified motorcyclists near the Urdu Chowk in Orangi Town No-11 while they were going to their residence. Later, during treatment injured Younus also breathed his last.
The MLO Abbasi Shaheed Hospital said that both the deceased had received three bullets each on their upper parts of bodies.The SHO Mominabad said that both the deceased were activists of the PPP and living in the limits of the same police station.
Arshad, 30, was shot dead when unidentified attackers riding a motorcycle opened fire on his car in the limits of Rizvia Society police station. The body was shifted to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital for post-mortem. The MLO Abbasi Shaheed Hospital said that the deceased received three bullets wounds from a close range on upper parts of his body. The victim was a police informer, which might be the reason for his murder.
Muhammad Anwar-Ul-Haq, 38, was gunned down by unknown armed men riding a motorcycle near Shah Faisal Colony No-2 in Shah Faisal Colony police jurisdiction. The police shifted the body to the JPMC for legal formalities. The MLO at the JPMC said that the deceased received five bullets on his upper parts of body. Police said the deceased was an activist of Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) and was gunned down in a targeted attempt.
In the Mangopir police limits, Saqafat, 35, was shot dead by unidentified motorcyclists who intercepted his vehicle near Paktoonabad. The body was shifted to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital for legal formalities.
Owais, 35, received bullet wounds when unidentified people opened fire on him near Sector 7/A of Surjani Town. He was rushed to a private hospital in critical condition, where during treatment he breathed his last. Police said that the deceased was a worker of PPP Unit 97.
Shabaz, 50, was shot dead while his friends Imran, Muhammad Shahid, Zahid Raheem and Javed were injured by four unknown armed men riding two motorcycles near Imambargah Hussainia Iranian in Kharadar police station limits. The victims were sitting near the SM Sweet shop. The dead and the injured were taken to the Civil Hospital for postmortem and treatment.
Abdul Kareem Bengali, 30, was shot dead when unidentified people opened fire on him at the Fish Harbour in Jackson police limits. The body was shifted to the Civil Hospital for legal formalities. Police said the deceased was a fish merchant and was killed after refusing to give extortion money.
Unknown armed motorcyclists shot dead a 35-year-old man near Johar Morr in the limits of Shahrae Faisal police station. The victim whose identity could not be ascertained was traveling on his motorcycle. The body was shifted to the JPMC for post-mortem.
