Jesse Jackson criticized for tweet that said violence in jogger's murder is ... - al.com (blog)

Civil rights leader Jesse Jackson is being criticized for a somewhat tepid tweet about the actions of three teenagers who shot an Australian man as he jogged near  Oklahoma City last week, according to a Fox News story.

Jackson's tweet about Christopher Lane, which read, "This senseless violence is frowned upon and the justice system must prevail," drew responses from a chorus of Twitter users along with op-ed pieces and a bashing on Facebook.

Jackson posted a longer response on Facebook, soon after the original tweet saying, "The recent incidents of violence in America most notably the murder of Christopher Lane an aspiring student athlete from Australia in Oklahoma and the attack of a student on a school bus in Florida once again calls each of us to a collectively resist all forms of violence in our society."

Responses there ran along much the same line as previous tweets.

"Will you be calling on the DOJ to investigate? Will you be there at the trials, calling for justice, and the death penalty for these punks? Somehow, I doubt it. You would have MUCH more credibility (you have zero now), if you told the truth, and acknowledged that racism is a two way street ...", said Rick Rolfes.

Many tweeters referenced Jackson's involvement with protests over the shooting of Trayvon Martin, a young black man, by neighborhood watch volunteer George Zimmerman last year. Zimmerman was found not guilty of second-degree murder and manslaughter.

Lane was fatally shot last Friday in the town of Duncan, about 30 miles southwest of Oklahoma City. He had just returned from Australia and was on a baseball scholarship at East Central University in Ada, Okla.
