Typhoon Bopha: Philippines storm toll passes 1000 - BBC News

The number of people killed after Typhoon Bopha struck the southern Philippines has risen to more than 1,000, officials say.

With nearly 850 people still missing, the toll is likely to rise further, Civil Defence chief Benito Ramos said.

The storm struck the Philippines on 4 December, with the southern island of Mindanao worst affected.

Many of those still unaccounted for are fishermen who went to sea before the storm hit.

"The death toll will go higher," Mr Ramos told AFP news agency. "We found a lot of bodies yesterday, buried under fallen logs and debris."

The number of people known to have died now stands at 1,020, the national disaster relief agency said.

The storm displaced hundreds of thousands of people and caused severe damage to property and infrastructure.

A large relief operation continues.

More than 27,000 people remain in evacuation centres, with many more sheltering at the homes of friends and family.

The Philippines is hit by several typhoons each year but they usually strike further to the north.

Last year, Typhoon Washi left about 1,300 people dead when it struck northern Mindanao, causing rivers to burst their banks.

Death 'was preventable' - Irish Independent

The murder of Breda Cummins by her ex-partner just weeks after she ended their relationship is a classic example of "extreme domestic violence" that could have been prevented, according to retired Detective Inspector Gerry O'Carroll.

Outside court, Ms Cummins's sister Sabrina (35) said the killer, Michael McDonald, had a history of violence towards her younger sibling.

But McDonald's chilling words and actions were "almost a carbon copy of cases of domestic violence that I've investigated", Mr O'Carroll told an international conference on domestic violence in Dublin, where he was a panelist.

"Normally when the relationship breaks up it's a very dangerous time for the wife or the partner," he told the Irish Independent.

"It's on a level of danger that is nine on the Richter scale. It's at that moment when tempers explode and where he'll kill and he'll commit unspeakable violence, even knowing that he'll be caught,"

But in all too many cases, women end up being killed because they don't report domestic violence or testify against their partners before it escalates to murder, said Mr O'Carroll.

Heiress Tamara Ecclestone Never Saw Sex Scandal Coming - Extra

Tamara Ecclestone opened up to “Extra” about the day her world came crashing down.

Correspondent A.J. Calloway sat down with the billionaire heiress at Upstairs, the penthouse lounge at the Kimberly Hotel in New York, for the full story. Ecclestone said that her father, Formula One racing tycoon Bernie Ecclestone, asked her to stop by his office. When she arrived, Bernie and others showed her a shocking video of then boyfriend Omar Khyami.

“They play a tape of my boyfriend basically having sex with somebody else,” she explained. “The fact that it wasn't a woman was what made it so shocking, because I just never ever, ever saw that coming.”

When the “Billion Dollar Girl” confronted Omar about the affair, he said he was being blackmailed and then “he came up with all these weird excuses.”

The reality star, however, is moving on with her life. She believes, “The best is yet to come, and that's kind of what I'm going to take from this experience!”

Fun Fact: Tamara's sister, Petra Ecclestone, bought the Aaron Spelling mansion in 2011 for $85 million.

Lindsay Lohan not on drugs, is a 'victim,' her attorney says - Los Angeles Times

Lindsay Lohan, who faces charges in New York and Santa Monica, is a "victim" and was not on drugs at the time of her latest arrest, her attorney said.

Lohan was charged Thursday with three misdemeanors for allegedly lying to Santa Monica police in connection with a June traffic accident on Pacific Coast Highway.

The charges came hours after the "Mean Girls" and "The Parent Trap" actress was arrested in New York on suspicion of third-degree assault, a misdemeanor, after she allegedly punched a woman in the face at Club Avenue in Manhattan's fashionable meatpacking district.

Her attorney in that case denied the actress did anything wrong.

"Once again, Lindsay Lohan is a victim of someone trying to capture their 15 minutes of fame," New York attorney Mark Heller said in a statement obtained by the Associated Press. "From my initial investigation, I am completely confident that this case will be concluded favorably and that Lindsay will be totally exonerated."

Separately, Heller told E! Entertainment: "She was certainly not intoxicated, certainly not under the influence of drugs. She was clear [and] lucid, her eyes were clear. No alcohol involvement whatsoever on this occasion."

Report links murder to domestic violence - Sky News Australia

    Updated: 22:15, Tuesday November 20, 2012

Domestic violence is involved in nearly half of all murders in Queensland, the state coroner's report says.

The annual report also shows 14 per cent of pending matters before coroners are more than two years old - a slight increase compared to the previous year.

The backlog is largely due to coroners waiting for police or other expert investigations, or the outcome of criminal proceedings.

In his foreword, State Coroner Michael Barnes says the workload has increased and acknowledges 'an undesirable increase in the number of matters taking longer to complete'.

'Coroners are aware delays in finalising coronial matters can cause distress for family members, and strive to conclude matters expeditiously,' he said.

The report found domestic violence was involved in nearly 50 per cent of all homicides committed in Queensland over the past five years.

Mr Barnes said this 'social scourge' was analysed by a trial team of three experts based in his office.

The team also played a major role in the inquest of a Gold Coast triple murder suicide where a man killed his ex-partner and her lover before gassing himself and his five-year-old daughter.

Mr Barnes said despite the invaluable work of the Domestic and Family Violence Death Review Unit, the trial's funding was being reviewed.

The murder of a Pakistani man in Athens is a result of the Greek authorities' failure to take decisive action against racially-motivated violence, Amnesty International said today.

Two people on a motorcycle stabbed the 27-year-old as he was riding his bicycle in Petralona, Athens, on 16 January and he died later of his wounds. The police have arrested two Greek nationals in connection with the killing.

Marek Marczynski, Europe and Central Asia Deputy Programme Director at Amnesty International, said:

"Amnesty has received testimonies and information about four Egyptian nationals who have been attacked and injured over the past two months in the areas of Pireus, Keratsini and Moschato.

"The Greek authorities must investigate racially-motivated violence and bring the perpetrators to justice. They must take urgent action to put an end to the long line of intimidating racist attacks in the country."

A mother, father, grandmother and three kids were in the home in the 1400 block of Tradewinds Avenue in the Crystal Lake area when the fire broke out last night.

Neighbors say they heard a boom and then ran for help.

Health officers arrest patient for refusing TB drugs, infecting others - The Standard Digital News

    By Antony Gitonga

Public health officers and police in Naivasha have arrested a TB patient for refusing to take medication.

The flower farm worker was arrested in the sprawling Kihoto estate after he failed to take drugs prescribed for TB treatment despite getting several warnings from medical personnel.

He has reportedly already infected three members of his close family with the deadly disease.

Confirming the arrest, Naivasha District Public Health Officer Samuel King'ori said the suspect was being held at Naivasha Police Station.

    Charged

Mr King'ori said the middle-aged man would be charged with failing to take TB drugs as stipulated in the law.

"The suspect was arrested after failing to take TB medication despite warnings by medical officers," said the senior officer.

His three relatives infected with the disease are being treated and were responding positively to medication.

"It's illegal to default on TB drugs as they are given free of charge in government health facilities," he said.

And on the just-concluded measles campaign in the area, King'ori said they had surpassed their target of immunising 50,000 children.

Despite facing various challenges like vehicles and opposition from some sect members in the area, King'ori said they had achieved 105 per cent.

3 people killed in car bombing in eastern Iraq - Xinhua

BAQUBA, Iraq, Nov. 18 (Xinhua) -- Three people were killed and 18 wounded in a car bomb explosion near a marketplace in Iraq's eastern province of Diyala on Sunday, a provincial police source said.

A booby-trapped car went off at a parking lot of a popular marketplace, which was close to an Iraqi army checkpoint in Khalis, just north of the provincial capital city of Baquba, some 65 km northeast of the capital Baghdad, the source told Xinhua on condition of anonymity.

Four soldiers were among the 18 wounded people. The powerful blast caused three people dead and severe damage of seven shops as well as several civilian vehicles, the source said.

Diyala province, which stretches from the eastern edges of Baghdad to the Iranian border east of the country, has long been a stronghold for al-Qaida militants and other insurgent groups since the U.S. led invasion of Iraq in 2003.

Violence in Iraq has decreased from its climax in 2006 and 2007, when sectarian conflicts pushed the country to the brink of a civil war, but tensions and sporadic shootings and bombings are still common across the country.

Workers arrested in Sharjah for 'obscene massages' - The National

SHARJAH // Twelve people including ten women have been arrested during sting operations at two Thai massage parlours in the emirate.

Police raided the first of the parlours on Tuesday and arrested eight people, including six masseuses. They identified the male owners of the salon as Guenaell S and Russell D from Bangladesh. All of the women arrested were from Thailand.

Clients reportedly paid Dh150 for an hour-long therapeutic massage at the parlour. The women would then suggest to their clients the idea of a more intimate act they called 'the special' for an additional Dh100.

In a second sting the following day, police arrested four women at another massage parlour where they say men were receiving "obscene massages" for Dh150.

The raids are part of what police describe as a campaign to "halt illegal obscene practices" that contradict the country's religion and culture.

A spokesman said the campaign had started after CID received repeated tip-offs about illegal practices at parlours. In the UAE, it is illegal for female spa employees to work on male clients - regardless of whether the massage is therapeutic or more exotic in nature.

Sharjah Police have appealed to the public to call them and give any useful information about other parlours involved in similar bad practices.

A celebration in Abidjan, the Ivory Coast's largest city, turned deadly shortly after midnight, when panic swept through a crowd of people who had gathered at a local stadium for a New Year's Eve fireworks show.

The head of military rescue workers, Lieutenant Colonel Issa Sako, told journalists at the scene that 61 people had died, adding that "49 were evacuated" by rescue workers. Other injured people went to the hospital on their own.

Another rescue official said earlier that 200 had been injured. Many of the victims were under the age of 15.

The flow of people in the stadium caused "a very large crush," Sako said. "In the crush, people were walked over and suffocated by the crowd."

A stampede broke out after fireworks at the stadium had ended, witnesses said, but the cause remains unclear.

President Alassane Ouattra, visiting injured people in the hospital, called the incident a national tragedy and said an investigation was underway to determine what happened.

The stampede is the worst of its kind in Abidjan since a 2010 stampede inside a stadium during a football match that killed 18 people.

The fireworks show, Abidjan's second in as many years, had been promoted as a symbol of national renewal under Ouattra after the post-election violence that killed some 3,000 people between December 2010 and April 2011.

Advocate says murder reveals domestic violence stereotypes - STLtoday.com

Reaction to the murder of Jennifer Boyce underscores how stereotypes still cloud our views of domestic violence and likely keep some potential victims from seeking help, one advocate said Friday.

"There's still this very pervasive mythology that domestic violence happens only to certain people," said Shannon Barry, executive director of Domestic Abuse Intervention Services (DAIS), a Madison shelter.

Barry said she was struck by a comment from a Boyce family member that "these things happen on TV, they don't happen to us." The family member went on to say, "We're middle class, normal Americans, and she was a nice girl."

Statistics show domestic violence crosses racial, educational and socio-economic lines, Barry said. "There's this idea that, 'This doesn't happen to people like me. I'm strong, I'm independent. I'm well-educated. I come from a good family.' That can be a real barrier to reaching out for assistance," Barry said.

Boyce, 31, was an epidemiologist with the state Division of Public Health and had completed her first Wisconsin Ironman triathlon in 2011. Her estranged husband, Bernard Grosso, died from what police believe was a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The two were due in court Friday morning to finalize a divorce.

The risk of being murdered increases sixfold when a person is attempting to dissolve a relationship, Barry said.

Suspected Novato cocaine dealers arrested by drug task force - Marin Independent-Journal

Three men suspected of selling cocaine around Novato were arrested in an undercover investigation by county drug detectives, a sheriff's official said.

Antonio Gonzalez, 32, and Jose Mendoza, 38, both of Novato, and Juan Garibay, 30, of Richmond are being held at Marin County Jail on suspicion of drug crimes and conspiracy. Bail is set at $20,000 each.

The suspects were arrested last week after an investigation by the county's multiagency drug unit, the Marin County Major Crimes Task Force. The drug squad developed information that Gonzalez was selling cocaine at various locations in Novato, so it sent an undercover detective out to buy drugs from him, said sheriff's Sgt. Pierre Ahuncain.

The detective bought cocaine on five occasions, and the investigation led to two suspected drug sources, Mendoza and Garibay, Ahuncain said. Investigators obtained search warrants for the suspects and their homes and seized additional suspected cocaine.

Gonzalez and Garibay were arrested in the shopping center at 1535 S. Novato Blvd. Mendoza was stopped in traffic.

All three suspects have pleaded not guilty and return to court Jan. 16 for further hearings.

Essex: Increase In People Killed In Crashes - Heart

The number of people killed in crashes on roads in Essex has risen after a two-year drop.

Figures show that 48 people died in 46 collisions in 2012.

During 2011, 41 people were killed in 38 fatal crashes.

Road Policing Chief Inspector Rachel Nolan said: "The figures are disappointing and we can only hope our road safety messages hit home in 2013. These fatal crashes are needless."

Chief Insp Nolan added: "The four main contributing factors being road crashes, whether they result in death or not, are failure to wear a seat belt, mobile telephone abuse, drink-driving or speeding. All road users must be aware of this. If all of these factors were cut out and motoring laws adhered to then people would not be injured or killed."

In 2012, 3,600 people were injured in collisions with 670 of those being classed as serious.

The comparative 2011 figure stood at 4,000 people injured of which 745 casualties were classed as serious.

Chief Insp Nolan concluded: "We will continue to rigorously enforce offences relating to the four key road safety factors throughout the next 12 months."

16 People Arrested After Drug Trafficking Investigation - San Diego 6

SAN DIEGO - A nearly two-year investigation into a drug trafficking organization led to the arrests of 16 people in San Diego and the seizure of more than 1,000 pounds of methamphetamine and $200,000 in cash.

Along with cocaine, heroin and marijuana, according to District Attorney Bonnie Dumanis. "Operation Knight Stalker" targeted legacy members of the La Familia Michoacan drug cartel and members of the Knights Templar Cartel in California and Mexico.

In all, San Diego prosecutors issued arrest warrants for 30 people, charging them with transportation and possession for sale of meth, cocaine and heroin, along with conspiracy and child endangerment.

Dumanis said that during the investigation, drugs were found in cars and stash houses and taped to the bodies of smugglers.

"This operation gives you a window into the continuing large-scale drug trafficking that continues to plague San Diego County across the U.S.-Mexico border," Dumanis said.

"The internal dynamics of these dangerous cartels is constantly changing, but operations like this one cripple their ability to do business."

Early in the investigation, intelligence revealed that La Familia Michoacan was embroiled in a turf war with an offshoot group known as Knights Templar Cartel.

That led to an all-out war between the two groups, contributing to the rise in power of the Knights Templar Cartel in Mexico and the United States, authorities said.

Three arrested for drug related charges after bust in South Dakota - WEAU-TV 13

(WEAU) – A drug bust in South Dakota leads to three arrests in western Wisconsin.

The Onalaska Police Department says it got a call on October 7th from the Drug Task Force in Rapid City, South Dakota. The task force said it had caught a person driving from California to Onalaska with 37 pounds of marijuana.

The police department says officers then dropped the marijuana at its intended destination, in a garage at a home on 9th Avenue North in Onalaska. Police say officers then saw a driver stop at the garage and then leave. Officers stopped that car and arrested Brandon Eckert after they found 9 pounds of pot in his car.

Police say officers also executed a search warrant at the house the drugs were dropped at, which lead to the arrest of Ben Zimmer and Alyssa Zimmer, who lived at the home. Police say Ben Zimmer and Eckert were arrested on charges of possession with the intent to deliver, and Alyssa Zimmer was arrested on a charge of being a party to marijuana possession with intent to deliver.

7 teenagers arrested on drug charges at Kalispell's Glacier High - Billings Gazette

KALISPELL — Police investigations into allegations of drug use and drug dealing by students at Glacier High led to the arrest of seven teenagers this week, according to school resource officer Jason Parce of the Kalispell Police Department.

The four investigations were unrelated and began two weeks ago, Parce said, and led to the arrests on Tuesday of seven boys between the ages of 14 and 15.

They were arrested on school grounds, and the charges include possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of drugs and, in the case of four students, distribution of drugs on or near school property.

The drugs being sold and possessed included marijuana and prescription medications, Parce said.

Two of the four investigations began as theft cases reported by students, he said, and led to the discovery of the illicit drug activity.

All of the cases have been referred to Flathead County Youth Court, while the students are disciplined in accordance with school policy.

Parce said parents, school staff and concerned students all helped collaborate to identify the students and report the crimes.

"This is a great example of the school working with the Kalispell Police Department, and parents, students and community members collaborating to make these investigations successful," Parce said.

"Because we have school resource officers in the schools, building relationships, we get a lot of support from the community."

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Saint Joseph's has suspended junior forward Halil Kanacevic for two games and a week of practice for unsportsmanlike conduct against Villanova.

Coach Phil Martelli announced the punishment Wednesday. Kanacevic will miss the Dec. 22 game against Fairfield and the Dec. 28 game against Iona. He will not participate in any team activities for a week, with the exception of Saint Joe's annual Christmas charity event.

Kanacevic can return to practice and team activities Dec. 19 for St. Joe's (5-3), and will be eligible to play Dec. 31 at Drexel.

He made an obscene gesture toward the Villanova student section after hitting a 3-pointer in a 65-61 loss on Tuesday night.

"There is no place for obscene gestures or personal outbursts directed at anyone," Martelli said. "We have always sought to conduct ourselves in a respectful manner to our university and to our opponents, and this behavior was unacceptable and inexcusable, even in the heat of the moment."

    Kanacevic apologized.

"My actions were wrong and embarrassing and I strongly regret them," he said. "I made a mistake and I accept total responsibility for my behavior. I am sorry for the harm caused to my teammates and coaches and my actions were unbecoming of a member of our community. I sincerely apologize to both universities and to everyone who saw the game."

11 killed as Taliban storm NATO base in Afghanistan - Zee News

11 killed as Taliban storm NATO base in Afghanistan Kabul: At least 11 people, including nine Taliban men, were killed Sunday when militants wearing suicide vests stormed a major NATO base in Afghanistan, media reports said.

Slow down, and remember those killed in vehicle crashes - Energeticcity.ca

"This day of remembrance is a time to reflect on the hundreds of lives that are lost and thousands who are injured in crashes throughout our province every year," says Mary Polak, Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure. "Many of these crashes, and the devastating impact they have on families, are completely preventable so please slow down and drive carefully."

ICBC is taking this week to remind drivers to slow down, and adjust their driving to the road conditions. In B.C., speeding is the leading cause of car crash fatalities, with an average of 27 people killed in our region each year. Another average of 24 crashes a month resulting in injuries or death in our area are due to people driving too fast for the conditions. That's especially an issue in the north, where for several months of the year roads are in winter condition, and in December that number doubles to 50.

"In honour of those who have lost their lives on our roads, and their loved ones, we're urging drivers to slow down and give themselves extra time so they get home to their families safely," said John Dickinson, ICBC Director of Road Safety. "Speeding is the leading cause of car crash fatalities in B.C. and when combined with poor weather conditions, it dramatically increases your risk of crashing."

At least two people killed, scores injured, in Israeli raids on Gaza - Al-Arabiya

At least two Palestinians were killed on Monday and several others wounded after an Israeli air raid hit the Gaza strip town of Beit Hanun.

The Israeli air raid was the second on northern Gaza during the morning.

The strike came after Israeli forces confirmed a mortar shelling by Gaza gunmen, allegedly belonging to Hamas, at "a routine [army] patrol in the area," officials said in a statement.

The raid was targeting a "rocket launching squad" in Gaza, the statement added. The strike was directed against a Hamas training camp and other targets, according to Reuters.

Hamas claimed that one of the killed gunmen belongs to its own and that two of its fighters were also wounded. The other casualty was not immediately identified, according to Reuters.

Israeli forces warned that they will "operate against anyone who uses terror against the State of Israel," blaming the security threats on Hamas.

More than 50 rockets have been fired from Gaza into Israel this month, an Israeli army spokeswoman said on condition of anonymity. Meanwhile, eight Palestinians have been killed in Gaza by Israeli fire in the month.

DEU investigation leads to 7 arrests, drug operation bust - WPDE

A six month surveillance operation by the Drug Enforcement Unit led to six drug related arrests and a bust of a drug operation in Myrtle Beach on Friday.

Agents recovered 33 grams of powder heroin, eight grams of crack cocaine, and two grams marijuana at a home on Black Cherry Way, according to DEU Deputy Commander Dean Bishop. The home served as the base for the operation.

The agents also recovered $10,000 in cash.

Bishop said 33 grams of heroin would produce 330 individual hits valued at $25 - $35.

The group created a problem because of the size of the organization and the volume of the drugs they were distributing, said Bishop.

Bishop believes this organization is affiliated with an organization in New York known as the 24/7 boys.

They are a mid to upper level interstate group that Bishop said would truly operate around the clock to deliver drugs to their clients.

DEU agents were informed of this drug operation by arresting clients that would confess where they bought the drugs, said Bishop.

Deshone Brown, 26, of Murrells Inlet, Joseph White, 28, of Myrtle Beach were arrested in connection to the operation from the Grand Strand.

Ivan Chatman, 21, Dwight Hawkins, 23, Dominque House, 19, and Jaqwan Martin, 22, all from Buffalo, New York were also arrested.

They are all facing several distribution, manufacturing, and possesion charges of cocaine, heroin, and marijuana.

4 Americans at Benghazi on September 11.   Inconsistent statements by the Obama Administration about four dead Americans and a video story that made no sense was not enough for many journalists to investigate….go figure….

Nor did it set off alarms for many journalists when Fox, which was aggressively investigating Bengahzi, was excluded from the two briefings (first State Department and then the CIA.)  It is so transparent that the Obama Administration was trying to punish Fox for doing its job. In other words, "don't play ball and you won't get invited."  Access has a price.

And when the Washington Post editorial board finally had to admit about a week ago that Benghazi is a very serious story that they had not aggressively pursued but Fox had and still is, the Washington Post Board could not help but show its colors and throw in two gratuitous insults about Fox ("scurrilous and blustery" to describe some of our on air discussion of the story they had virtually ignored.)

But now that there is sex….the media wakes up?

(By the way, unlike some, CBS has been doing some great reporting on Benghazi.)

Government condemns racist violence in wake of Pakistani laborer's murder - Kathimerini

The government has issued a condemnation of the murder of a 27-year-old Pakistani man in central Athens last week.

In a statement, Alternate Interior Minister Charalambos Athanasiou said that violent attacks and racism should be met with zero tolerance.

The reprehensible murder of the 27-year-old Pakistani migrant in Athens is condemned unreservedly, along with racist violence, regardless of who is behind it.

The two men, a 29-year-old fireman and 25-year-old private sector employee, accused of murdering the Pakistani laborer in Petralona on Thursday appeared before a magistrate on Friday.

They told the judge that they argued with the victim after he allegedly got in their way with his bicycle. According to a witness, one of the suspects attacked the man with a knife from behind after a row.

Fifty Golden Dawn pre-election pamphlets were found at the 25-year-olds home along with bats and knives. The neo-Nazi party has been linked to numerous attacks on migrants, including the murder of an Iraqi man in Athens last summer.

The victim was named by local media as Sahjat Luqman, who had been living in Greece for the past six years and had a job loading oranges onto trucks.

Members of Athenss Pakistani community mourned the death of their countrymen at a public event on Saturday, which coincided with an anti-racism rally in the city center.

5 arrested in connection with drug sales in Little Falls - NorthJersey.com

LITTLE FALLS - An investigation into the sale of illegal drugs at a Woodcliff Avenue home led to the arrest of five people Thursday night, police said.

Authorities arrested and charged one person with possession of cocaine and drug paraphernalia, one person for possession of less than 50 grams of marijuana and three people for possession of drug paraphernalia, said Detective Sgt. Jim Briggs.

"We were told by numerous confidential informants that drugs were being sold by certain individual at a certain location," he said. "Based on that investigation I did obtain a search warrant."

The warrant was for 18-year-old Little Falls resident Anthony Mangione's 2010 Nissan Ultima and his friend's home, according to Briggs.

"When we hit the friend's house, the friend, the mother, the roommate and another individual all had drug paraphernalia," Briggs said.

Along with the others, Mangione is scheduled to appear in Little Falls Municipal Court on Jan. 8. Briggs said that because of the cocaine charge, all those arrested will go to Passaic County Superior Court.

Briggs credits the confidential informants for their help in combating drug crime.

"We welcome the public's help in combating these issues," he said.

Eight-Nine People Killed On Western Cape Roads, 42 Percent Passengers - AllAfrica.com

Up until 16 December 2012, 89 people had been killed on the Western Cape Roads, compared to 66 in 2011, an increase of 35%.

Of the 89 lives lost already in the province, 37 have been passengers, 31 pedestrians, 16 drivers, three motorcyclists and two cyclists.

At an enforcement operation carried out by Provincial Traffic authorities, it was observed that 65% of drivers were not buckled up, while a staggering 83% of back seat passengers were also not buckled up.

"These figures are very alarming. They direct all of us to the very serious dangers that drivers and passengers place themselves in by not buckling up. Last year, at this time, 17 passengers had been killed on our roads compared to 37 this year, a very worrying 122% increase. Lives are now being lost on our roads at a rate of five people a day, and will continue to do so if some drivers persist with treating the rules of the road with such serious disregard, and fail to buckle themselves, and their increasingly vulnerable passengers, up.

"The significant role played by fatigue was again demonstrated by a vehicle driving head on into a South African Police Service (SAPS) vehicle in Beaufort West. Preliminary investigations by SAPS indicated that the driver had been nodding off at the wheel several times before the crash.

"Fatigue has played a major role in the December fatalities, and the current actions to deal with fatigue will continue," added Carlisle.

The Kelowna RCMP broke up a couple of drug deals on Friday night, removing a significant amount of illegal drugs from the streets in the process.

The Kelowna RCMP Property/Target teams and General G.I. Section reports using the Police Dog services after two men with First Nations gang affiliations were located in the downtown core of Kelowna doing a drug transaction.

The pair were arrested around 6:00 p.m. Friday and are being held in custody on drug trafficking charges.

Officers approached and found one of the men had an outstanding warrant and was in possession of Heroin. The subsequent search of his motel room led to more serious charges.

After obtaining a search warrant, investigators say they found approximately $13,000 worth of Methamphetamine and Heroin, $5,550 in cash, and stolen property.

Two charges of Possession for the Purpose of Trafficking and two charges of Trafficking have been laid against Mark Banman, who will remain in custody until his first court appearance on Monday, October 22.

Friday's sweep also led to the arrest of a female who police say was in the same area to purchase drugs.
