DECATUR, Ala. (WAAY) - A two-year member of the city's police force resigned after being arrested for illegally buying prescription drugs, police said Friday afternoon.

Police said Timothy Landon Hughes, 24, was arrested around 9 a.m. Friday for buying oxycodone in the parking lot of the Garden Suites Inn on Wilson Street. Police said Hughes had three pills in his possession at the time of his arrest. Officers began investigating Hughes after receiving a tip that he was illegally buying prescription medication.

"It's very difficult for us to do this but by the same token we will aggressively enforce the law and should a member of our department be involved in illegal activities, we will aggressively pursue that" said Decatur Police Chief Ed Taylor.

Hughes is out of jail on a $2,500 bond. He resigned shortly afterward, police said.

Hughes joined the police department in 2011 and worked the night shift.
