Yohanan Plesner, an Israeli opposition MP and member of the Knesset's Foreign and Security Committee, tells the BBC that Israel has no desire to send in ground troops. "I think the goal of the operation was quite clearly articulated; not to topple Hamas," he says. Israel, he explains, wants to "restore stability, calmness and deterrence, and for that to happen we don't need to enter the Gaza". "But we need Hamas to take on itself a clear commitment to cease the attacks on Israeli citizens and on Israeli interests."
