Bank founder's murder heightens alarm over gun violence
PETALING JAYA, July 30 The brazen assassination of financial wizard Hussain Ahmad Najadi in a busy car park in the heart of Kuala Lumpur has heightened alarm over the spate of gun violence in the country.
The close-range shooting of the Arab-Malaysian Development Bank founder and his wife who survived the attack comes three days after the attempted murder of anti-crime activist R. Sri Sanjeevan at a traffic light junction in Jempol, Negri Sembilan.
A third case occurred on Sunday night in Ipoh when two men opened fire using an automatic gun on a group of restaurant patrons, killing one and injuring two.
The capital city was yesterday stunned by the execution of Ahmad Najadi that took place in broad daylight in a heavy people traffic area, increasing fears of rising gun violence in public places.
In the last four months, 13 cases of shooting have been reported nationwide, including five in the Klang Valley.
At 12.30pm yesterday Ahmad Najadi, 75, and his wife Cheong Mei Kuen, 49, had gone to Ceylon Kuan Yin temple in Lorong Ceylon 4 near Bukit Bintang to meet a man to discuss a share transaction.
Dang Wangi police chief ACP Zainuddin Ahmad said after the meeting around 2pm, Ahmad Najadi and his wife spent a few minutes in the temple before walking towards their car at a nearby car park. Three suspects were believed to have been waiting to ambush the victim and his wife.
He said one of the men walked towards them and fired at least four shots.
Ahmad Najadi was shot on his chest and left side of his ribs, while his wife was shot on her left hand and right thigh.
The man died on the spot while his wife collapsed on the road.
Closed-circuit television cameras (CCTV) along the street showed the shooter was wearing a long-sleeve checked shirt and khaki pants. Witnesses said the three suspects fled the scene in a Proton Waja taxi.
Police said the suspects are believed to be aged between 35 and 40 years old.
Zainuddin said the motive of the assassination is unknown. He said first investigations suggested it could be due to business rivalry.
Police have not ruled out the involvement of hired killers.
