New details in domestic violence murder - ActionNewsJax.com

ORANGE PARK, Fla.-- Police just released disturbing new details about a domestic violence murder that claimed a local father's life and landed his wife in jail.

Jerry Bullard was found dead in the trunk of a car nearly a year ago. Police say Bullard's wife Jacquilla shot him in the head while he was in bed, then dragged his body to the trunk of the car. The report says the children told a relative they saw it happening.

But police say domestic violence happens more often than people think. Just last week, a mother was killed by her husband, as neighbors say she begged for her life for the sake of her daughter.

Ellen Siler is the Chief Executive Officer at Hubbard House. She says they see cases of abuse all the time. "Seventy percent of people in the last decade were murdered because of domestic violence in Duval County, and there's not a single police report," said Siler.

We looked into how many cases of domestic violence police have dealt with in our area. So far this year, Duval County has had 4,858 cases. St. Johns county has seen 315 cases. Cay County has arrested 195 people.

We did check the court records for the murder case against Bullard. A pre-trial court date is set for later this month.

There is a 24 hour hotline number you can call for help if you're in a domestic violence situation or know someone who is. That number is 1-800-500-1119.
