COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - Authorities say two people were killed after a driver fleeing Cayce police ran a red light and caused an early morning crash.
Investigators say 23-year-old Shyborn Belton had a stolen pistol and crack cocaine in his car and was driving a stolen 2011 Hyundai at about 70 mph when he ran a red light around 12:30 a.m. Friday near downtown Columbia after driving off from a traffic stop. The Hyundai hit a taxi and a minivan, which then hit a building and caught fire.
Coroner Gary Watts says Belton and the 48-year-old driver of the minivan, Chamberlain Branch, both died at the scene.
The taxi driver wasn't hurt.
Chamberlain was the longtime supervisor at South Carolina's Governor's Mansion. Gov. Nikki Haley said Friday her family was heartbroken at his death.
