Two arrested in separate drug smuggling incidents at Port of Douglas - AZFamily

DOUGLAS, Ariz. -- An 18-year-old Tucson woman and a 40-year-old Mexican national were arrested Thursday for allegedly trying to smuggle drugs through the Port of Douglas.

According to U.S. Customs and Border Protection, Jorge Enrique Diaz-Lopez was taken into custody after a narcotics canine alerted officers to eight packages of heroin hidden under the backseat of his truck.

The drugs weighed almost 18 pounds, and had an estimated value of more than $244,000.

On Thursday night, an 18-year-old woman was arrested after 137 packages of marijuana were allegedly found in her vehicle.

The drugs weighed 147 pounds and had an estimated value of more than $66,000.

Both Diaz-Lopez and the woman were turned over to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement's Homeland Security Investigations.

The drugs and vehicles were processed for seizure.
