JOPLIN, Mo. — Authorities have identified the two people who died in a plane crash in southwest Missouri Sunday night.

The victims were identified Tuesday as 50-year-old Richard A. Armstrong Jr., of Neosho, and 41-year-old Royce Deryl Edwards II of Joplin.

The Springfield News-Leader reports (http://sgfnow.co/SyyfZL) the plane's registration number — N6BS — corresponds to a 1956 model Cessna 310 registered to Edwards. Records show the fixed-wing, multi-engine aircraft's certification was not set to expire until April 2015.

Investigators from the National Transportation Safety Board are investigating the cause of the crash in a wooded area near Stotts City.

Authorities said the plane crashed after taking off from the Monett Airport. No one on the ground was hurt.
