Commissioner silent after being linked to drug arrest - NBC2 News

LEE COUNTY -

A lot of questions are being raised about Lee County Commissioner Brian Bigelow. Deputies say he was pulled over in a car with a teenager who was carrying drugs.

The sheriff's office didn't arrest Bigelow, even though they say they found marijuana in his car.  The commissioner was caught yesterday with an 18 year-old at a suspected drug house by a deputy watching the area.

He sped away from us on Wednesday and refused to answer our questions on Thursday.

"I have the highest regard for your profession - I really do - and the public's right to know. But I'm going to follow my lawyer's advice and provide no comment right now," Commissioner Bigelow said.

Parked in his driveway, was the same car that Lee County deputies say they found drugs inside of Wednesday.

"I'm just very shocked that this happened anywhere really but right here and to find out who this person is, is just – I'm kind of blown away," said witness Jim Melock.

Melock watched as the Lee County commissioner's car was searched by deputies at the intersection of Tice Street and New York Drive.

"I know when the officer approached the car, I heard him say that he smelled marijuana and that's when he proceeded to call the search," Melock said.

It was just after 1 p.m.

Lee county detectives say they were watching a suspected drug house on Ione Avenue, when they spotted Bigelow's car pull into the driveway.

They say they watched a possible deal go down.

Deputies pulled the car over a short while later. In the driver's seat was 18-year-old David Henley. His passenger was Commissioner Bigelow.

Detectives tell us they immediately smelled burned marijuana coming from the car.

Henley reportedly told them, "Sir, I want to be honest. I have a nick bag in my pants."

Then reached into his pants and pulled out a bag of marijuana.

Detectives noted that Bigelow began to act extremely nervous - his hands began to shake and he began to sweat.

Deputies say they found a small amount of marijuana scattered throughout the car, but it wasn't enough to test positive for THC.

Detectives report Henley admitted to buying the pot - so they arrested him. He was also arrested for driving Bigelow's car without a license.

Bigelow was cited for allowing that to happen.

Henley is also facing a cocaine possession charge after deputies reported finding some on him at the jail.

According to the report, Henley told deputies that Bigelow uses cocaine on a regular basis.

Deputies say they didn't arrest Bigelow on drug charges because he didn't have any drugs on him and because Henley admitted they were his.
