A SAVAGE killer has been jailed for at least 37 years after being convicted of murdering two vulnerable people while on the run from police.
Callous James Allen attacked Colin Dunford in his Middlesbrough home before stabbing Julie Davison to death in her Whitby flat three days later.
A nationwide manhunt was launched in April to track down the 36-year-old who fled his Middlesbrough hometown on a mountain bike after being accused of rape.
He was arrested in Leeds city centre when he was spotted by an off-duty police officer a week after murdering Mr Dunford.
The level of violence used on both victims was described as prolonged and brutal during his three week trial in Newcastle Crown Court.
One of the detectives leading the investigation said Allen showed an "arrogant disregard for his victims" and had shown no remorse for the families.
Today (Tuesday, November 30) he was convicted of the double murder which the judge said were of "quite exceptional brutality and savagery".
