KARACHI: Twelve more people fell prey to unabated curse of violence in the city on Tuesday amid arson attacks after the killing of two leaders belonging to Shiite community. The angry mobs torched four vehicles in separate areas in the city.
In the first incident, two men belonging to Shiite community were gunned down over sectarian issue near Parking Plaza, Sadder within the precincts of Brigade police station. According to police, at around 8:43 am two unidentified culprits intercepted a vehicle bearing registration No ADV-656 and opened targeted firing as a result, two men later identified as 42-year-old Allama Agha Aftab Jaffery and Mirza Shahid Ali received multiple fatal bullet wounds and died instantly.
After committing the swift crime, the culprits fled. Jaffery was the deputy secretary general of Majlis-e-Wahdat-e-Muslimeen (MWM) as well as the chief of the Palestine Foundation of Pakistan. He was also the leader of Jafferia Alliance Pakistan. Their funeral prayers were offered in Shah Khuransan Imambargah. The victims were laid to rest at Wadi-e-Hussain graveyard.
At least two participants of the funeral procession were killed and five others, including two Rangers personnel, were wounded, while three vehicles were set on fire en-route to the Wadi-e-Hussian graveyard. Police officials said that unidentified people torched at least two trucks and two buses in different spots in Liaquatabad and Numaish area. He said that the participants first opened firing, resultantly, two Rangers personnel Muhammad Majnu and Ghulam Rasool were injured.
Rangers restored to open firing in which Ali Hassan and Qasim Ali were killed while Faraz sustained injuries. Witnesses that the participants were injured by Rangers firing in Liaquatabad No. 10 of which two, Hassan and Qasim, succumbed to their injuries at ASH. He said that two more participants were injured when Rangers personnel again opened fire when the procession reached Ancholi locality.
Meanwhile, Allama Hassan Zafar Naqvi, the leader of the MWM, while addressing a press conference at Imambargah Ali Raza announced three day mourning and gave 72 hours ultimatum to the government to arrest the culprits. He said that there would be a countrywide protest if their demands are not fulfilled.
A worker of the Sunni Tehreek was gunned down in a targeted attack near Bahadurabad Chowrangi within the limits of New Town police station. An official said that Syed Mumtaz, 40, was sitting at his cosmetic shop at Al-Madina market when unidentified man shot him at least five times, killing him on the spot. The body was brought to JPMC for an autopsy. He said that deceased was the father of three children and was residing in Ranchore Line area. Two men were killed and another injured at People's Stadium Lyari within the limits of Kalri police station.
According to police, unidentified armed riders opened indiscriminate firing at a gathering near People's Ground Lyari, resultantly, Faizullah son of Shah Muhammad, Imran son of Qamaruddin and Farman received injuries. They were shifted to the Civil Hospital Karachi (CHK) for treatment, where doctors pronounced Faiz and Imran as dead. The bodies were later handed over to heirs after completing medico-legal-formalities.
A man was shot dead in Liaquat Market within the jurisdiction of Saudabad police station. An official said Zafar, 20, son of Wajahat, was sitting outside his house when an armed man opened fire at him as a result, he sustained single bullet in his forehead and died on the spot. The body was brought to JPMC for a postmortem. A man was gunned down near Labour Square, Landhi within the jurisdiction of Quaidabad police station. According to police, Imran Shah, 30, son of Musanif Shah, was going somewhere when armed riders killed him and fled. The body was moved to JPMC for an autopsy.
Separately, the bodies of three shot dead persons packed in gunny bags were found from Kareemabad Bridge within the limits of Gulberg police station.
SHO Tariq Baig said that on information about the bodies, the police rushed to the scene and shifted them to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital (ASH) for medico-legal formalities.
He informed that the identities of the victims could not be ascertained yet. The SHO informed that two of the victims were in mid-30s, while third was around 55-year-old. Their bodies were later moved to Edhi mortuary for identification. Further investigation was underway.
