Women's emergency shelter officials spoke out Friday following the death of Lacey Jones-McKnight, saying any signs of domestic abuse should never be ignored.

Lisa Falkowsky, executive director of the Calgary Emergency Women's Shelter, is reminding Calgarians there are safe havens and people who can help.

Jones-McKnight, 20, was found dead in a car parked on a bridge Thursday night, allegedly slain by her estranged boyfriend with whom she had a volatile relationship.

Falkowsky said stalking, the most dangerous cases being those initiated by ex-partners, is a clear warning sign of domestic violence.

"The Calgary Emergency Women's Shelter is very concerned," she said.

"When you are in a relationship, or when you have left a relationship, if your partner or ex partner begins to stalk you or make threatening remarks or has threatening behaviour you need to take that very seriously."

A study reported 76% of female victims were stalked by their assailants in the 12 months prior to their murder, she said.

The research shows women who report their perpetrator followed or spied on them were two times more likely to become the victim of homicide or attempted homicide.

"If you are being threatened by a partner, current or ex partner, there is help out there," she said.

"We get thousands of calls each year and we help every single person try to find a safer place to be."
