Overall violent crimes were down in the City of Beloit in 2011 compared to 2010.
Violent crimes are broken down into four categories murders, forcible rapes, robbery and aggravated assault.
In Beloit, violent crimes fell by about 1 percent.
About 1.2 million violent crimes were reported to local law enforcement across the country in 2011 a 3.8 percent decrease from 2010, the FBI said. Every category saw a percentage decrease.
A total of 554 violent crimes were reported to the Beloit Police Department in 2011 compared to 561 in 2010.
Beloit Police Chief Norm Jacobs said the drop can be attributed to several factors.
"Law enforcement can take some credit, but not all of it," he said. "Prosecutors, corrections, drug and alcohol investigators are all involved."
Assaults were the highest reported crime among the four categories totaling 485, up from 402 reported in 2011.
Assaults were also the highest reported crime in the nation, at 751,131 making up over 60 percent of all violent crimes last year.
The figure dropped by about 3.9 percent compared to 2010, and has dropped over 15 percent since 2002, the FBI's report said.
About 14,000 homicides were reported in the nation in 2011, a 0.7 percent decrease from 2010. There was one homicide in Beloit in 2011, and none have been reported this year. Three homicides were reported in 2010.
Jacobs said he carries a list of homicides and attempted homicides with him everywhere he goes.
The list, which dates back to March of 1982, is behind his meeting schedule and important phone numbers.
"People think that police forget the victims of homicides whether it's solved or not," he said. "I won't ever forget because they are always with me."
The last reported murder in the city was Shawn Bell in August 2011. Bell was found shot to death just a block away from Merrill Elementary School.
Robberies decreased slightly, falling from 60 in 2010 to 54 in 2011. However, robberies involving firearms increased from 22 to 30.
Forcible rape saw no change in the city with 14 being reported to police in both 2011 and 2010. Nationally, forcible rapes fell 2.5 percent to 83,425 last year.
Additionally, police records show that 354 burglaries occurred in 2011, which is down from 296 in 2010. Motor vehicle thefts also decreased from 75 in 2010 to 64 last year.
So far 2012 has seen more crimes through September than 2011 did during the same time period.
Just over 1,400 violent crimes have been reported to police, and 1,393 crimes were reported to police through September 2011.
