ELYRIA — John Dialinos, the suspended manager of airport security at Cleveland Hopkins International Airport, was sentenced to 10 days in jail and 90 days of house arrest Tuesday after pleading out to allegations he made obscene phone calls to North Ridgeville tanning salons and masturbated outside one.
Dialinos, 45, pleaded no contest to public indecency and two counts of telephone harassment during an appearance before Elyria Municipal Court Judge Lisa Locke Graves, who admonished him for his behavior.
"To be quite honest, I'm appalled," the judge said.
Locke Graves' comments came after Dialinos' attorney, John Paris, had finished asking that his client receive probation rather than jail time in the case.
Paris argued that Dialinos already had been punished thanks to extensive media coverage of his August arrest by North Ridgeville police following a lengthy investigation into the obscene calls received by tanning salons in the city.
Dialinos is on unpaid leave from his airport job and has been on house arrest since September, Paris said.
"He nearly lost his family, his friends, his dignity and he feels very bad about what happened to say the least," Paris said.
Paris said Dialinos was suffering from what was effectively a psychological condition that caused a "loss of impulse control." He argued it was a medical condition that was being punished by puritanical laws.
Paris also read a letter from Dialinos' wife, who said her husband was a good father to their daughter. The wife, who wasn't identified by name, also wrote that her family is suffering financially because of her husband's actions.
But Locke Graves said she didn't want to hear about the pain Dialinos and his family had endured. She said he had committed a crime and victimized tanning salon workers.
"Let's hear, 'I'm sorry. I'm at fault here,' " Locke Graves said.
Dialinos then said that he has always taken responsibility for his mistakes throughout his career.
"I fully understand that what I was doing was completely unacceptable, completely inexcusable, really," he said.
In addition to house arrest and jail time, Locke Graves ordered Dialinos to pay $1,000 worth of fines, ordered him to remain 500 feet away from tanning salons for the next five years and barred him from owning prepaid cell phones or other untraceable electronic equipment.
If he violates the terms of his probation, Locke Graves warned, she would send him to jail for additional time.
North Ridgeville police focused on Dialinos after he was spotted outside one salon and tracked to another salon after a worker at the first salon called police.
Inside his car, they found a prepaid "burner" cell phone that contained nothing in the contact list but tanning salons in the western suburbs of Cleveland. His pants also were unzipped when he was confronted by police.
They also linked him to a December incident in which a tanning salon worker reported seeing him masturbating in his car outside the salon where she worked.
Jackie Mayo, an airport spokeswoman, said Tuesday that the airport hadn't been formally notified of Dialinos' plea, but once they receive official word his status with the airport will be evaluated.
