Friends of Lacey Jones-McKnight have begun planning fundraising efforts to help cover funeral expenses for the 20-year-old murder victim.

"All of her co-workers phoned me this morning and they're doing a fundraiser," said Lacey's mother, Shelly Jones.

"They've got T-shirts and bands and they're going to be asking for donations for funeral expenses and to donate to domestic violence."

Countless other friends have taken to social media sites to express their grief and call for changes to the legal system to better protect victims of domestic violence.

Jones-McKnight was murdered Thursday. Her body was found in northeast Calgary and her ex-boyfriend Kristopher (Tray) Guenther has been charged with second-degree murder.

"Her death was the combination of many factors failing her, in a cascade," said Kenn Cooper, creator of the Justice for Lacey Jones-McKnight page on Facebook.

"By raising awareness about how this kind of end is a total breakdown of all parts of this system, perhaps I could save lives.

"It meant getting some kind of a page up, and starting to make some noise in an attempt to draw attention to the issue, and address it as a whole."

The page offers information on dealing with an aggressive or abusive ex, including how to recognize when you are the victim of abuse, how and why to obtain an Emergency Protection Order, what powers police have to intervene and what programs are offered by the Calgary Police Victim Assistance Unit.

Hundreds left comments on another Facebook page created in Lacey's memory.

"You always were there for anyone that needed you without judgement, and you would always see the good in everyone," wrote Heather Bennett.

"You will be sadly missed by all those who knew you well and those who were lucky enough to know your beautiful smile and laugh for just a brief moment."
