MORONGO VALLEY At least two people were killed in a head-on collision on Twentynine Palms Highway Monday afternoon.
Two vehicles collided head-on near Ole Street on the highway, killing two people, believed to be the drivers, California Highway Patrol Lt. D. R. Delong said.
Both victims were trapped in their vehicles and had not been moved as of 4 p.m., awaiting arrival of the county coroner.
Emergency responders do not believe the vehicles had any passengers.
Eastbound and westbound traffic was slowed as Caltrans workers directed cars while CHP officers and Morongo Valley firefighters investigated the scene.
One vehicle lay overturned on the south side of the highway, while the other, a sedan, was disabled in the eastbound fast lane.
Monday's incident marks the second deadly vehicle accident in Morongo Valley this year.
The collision is being investigated by the Morongo Basin CHP.
