A total of eight people have died on roads in the Republic already in 2013. There were a number of serious collisions on Irish roads over the weekend, including a fatal crash in Co Donegal.
Death in Donegal
The eighth victim was a lorry driver who died following a single-vehicle crash near Pettigo in Co Donegal.
Gardaí are investigating the incident, which happened on the Laghey to Pettigo road, close to the border with County Fermanagh.
The man, who is believed to have been from eastern Europe, was in his 30s, and crashed at Bannus, just outside Pettigo at about 11.30am on Monday morning.
He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Serious Crash in Cobh
Gardai in Cobh appealed for witnesses following a serious road traffic collision in the early hours of Sunday morning.
The accident occurred on the N25 Cork to Waterford Dual Carriageway, on the east bound left hand carriageway, approximately 150 metres east of the off ramp from Carrigtwohill.
Gardai wanted to speak to anyone who may have witnessed the collision around 1.45am and in particular to any motorists who may have been at the scene at the initinal time of crash.
Two Crashes in Fermanagh
Three people have been taken to hospital after two cars crashed in Co Fermanagh.
The collision happened on Boa Island Road in Kesh on Monday afternoon.
Anyone who witnessed the incident, which involved a silver Renault Megane and a silver Peugot 307, is asked to contact the PSNI in Enniskillen on 0845 600 8000.
Crash in Belfast
A man is in serious condition in hospital following a crash in south Belfast on Sunday morning. The man in his 20s was driving a black Ford Ka that crashed on the Lisburn Road at around 6am.
No other vehicles were involved in the collision.
Anyone who saw the incident has been asked to contact police.
Nine people have been killed across the island in road deaths in 2013.
