The Peter MacCallum Cancer Hospital will shut around 28 beds after about $2-million of government funding was cut. The bed closures follow similar cuts around the state including bed closures at the Austin Hospital, Frankston Hospital, Colac Hospital and Ballarat Base Hospital. Peter Mac Executive Director David Speakman says the hospital is working to minimise the impact on patients. "Despite closing beds we will be continuing to treat every single patient who comes through our doors to the very best of our ability," he told Neil Mitchell. I have exclusive details on what really is a crisis in the hospitals. Every day there are new bed closures all because the state and federal governments can't get their act together. While they fight, patients are suffering. I understand the latest emerged over the weekend. Staff were told beds would be closed in every ward at a magnificent and iconic life-saving Melbourne institution. A place where they perform miracle; but you need beds to perform miracles. The bed closures are at the Peter MacCallum Cancer Hospital. This political fight around people's lives is obscene and I am told by some in the health industry it will cost lives. It is happening everywhere. Colac Hospital has just announced it is closing emergency services overnight - so don't get sick after dark or you'll have to go to Geelong, the Austin or Frankston. Ambulances are also tied up. I spoke to several people in the health system last night and they say it is unprecedented. They say while the state and federal governments bicker, people will die. People who need not die will die. Everybody in health is trying to avoid that and nobody more so than Peter Mac. But here's the contrast: While the governments slash and fight, yesterday 900 vintage cars beetled around the Mornington Peninsula raising money for the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre. So the people are out there doing everything to make sure the health system is healthy, but the governments are squabbling over lives. If politicians are not responsible for this with their petty squabbling, then who is? If they can't fix it they don't deserve to collect their pay. It is a crisis. Each side is blaming the other. It is a crisis. Having problems listening? Upgrade your media player for Internet Explorer, Google Chrome or Firefox. (Click here to listen to the audio in a pop-up window) Every Victorian is whole heartly willing to scratch from the bottom of their pockets to give a donation to the Victorian Cancer Council. Where is our money going? To cut financial costs to the Peter Mac Hospital is barking up the wrong tree. JUST SICKENING! My country Australia is going downhill fast at a rapid rate things are happening here that shouldn't be it doesn't seem to be improving for us that were born here the government is too busy looking after what shouldn't be here and that's the illegal immigrants fair enough visit us on a visa but go back home we are full. We are over populated to the point of Aussie's being sacrificed. So what is the outcome achieved? No wonder Neil gets the Pollies on the phone, they are as safe as houses. The latest published comments of Gina Rinehart illustrate the extent her knowledge is lacking. It boggles the mind how someone so inept could gain control of a billion dollar empire. Statistics demonstrate that the majority of families will produce someone that will squander the assets of the empire every three or four generations. Rinehart has what is as close to a lock on a permanent revenue stream capable of maintaining her familys wealth as is possible but I believe she is still capable of squandering it. As sure as death and taxes Rinehert is the number one target for the people who are infinitely more powerful than she is. As sure as death and taxes they will prevail and she will lose the family fortune. It has escaped nobodys attention how much the journalistic integrity of Fairfax has diminished since she put the hamburgler on the board. I am interested to know why the Rinehart Empire has not been held to account for their contribution to the asbestos disaster that has cost the nation billions and the lives of tens of thousands. Her father was perhaps the most ardent supporter of asbestos who both mined it and distributed it. We are a nation that prides itself on our position against discrimination so it seems particularly unjust to hold the foreign company of James Hardy to account and allow the multi billion dollar Australian company of Hancock to evade any penalty. Cumulative interest doubles assets every 7 years so surely the settlement amount for Rinehart should be proportional to that factor multiplied by the Hardy settlement. I am not aware of any statute in law that allows Rinehart to evade her responsibilities when we consider that new deaths and cases are still occurring. The biggest problem in all this is because its a federal labor government and a state liberal government. The health industry has been in turmoil for years, maybe its an underlying problem such as management of the funds available, perhaps there is waste we are not told about.Regardless, governments must agree to fund these hospitals adequately, perhaps we need to look at the doctors pay and charges, and definitely look at what the administration is payedRecent entries

Same old Neil, talk up a storm, let the Pollies get away with not answering the question and not ask again.
Bring back Justim Smith, at least he makes the Pollies address the question otherwise he keeps asking for an answer.
