Space heaters behind fire that displaced 2 people, killed family pet - ABC NEWS 4

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) -- Emergency workers from five agencies responded to a house fire Thursday afternoon.

According to the Charleston Fire Department, crews responded around 4:40 p.m. to the home on Rookery Lane and brought the fire under control in 10 minutes.

Deputy Fire Marshal Ryan Kunitzer said two people were outside their home when they saw the fire and called 911 while rescuing five of their six dogs. The last dog did not make it out of the home and attempts to revive were unsuccessful.

"Members of the Fire Marshal Division responded to investigate the cause of the fire," said Captain Kunitzer. "The fire was determined to have originated in the rear sunroom of the residence in the vicinity of multiple portable heaters."

The sun room was substantially damaged and the fire extended into the home causing damage throughout.

The official cause of the fire is still under investigation.
