Two people died and a third had life-threatening injuries after a crash in the eastbound lanes of Interstate 64, west of Indian River Road on Wednesday night.
According to Virginia State Police, about 7 p.m. a westbound pickup crossed the median and collided with an eastbound vehicle. The driver and passenger in the vehicle that was struck died at the scene. The driver of the pickup was taken to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital with injuries that were considered life-threatening.
A single eastbound lane was left open while crews worked at the scene until shortly after 10 p.m. Traffic was backed up for miles.
The state police's Accident Reconstruction Team was called in to determine the cause of the crash.
