Man held over murder bid during flag violence - Belfast Newsletter

A PSNI spokesman said they were investigating reports of gunfire on the Newtownards Road, and said they have arrested a 38-year-old man on suspicion of attempted murder.

Police say they have been attacked by crowds of up 100 people, and officers have deployed a water connon.

They have advised the public to stay clear of the Newtownards Road between Bridge End and Holywood Arches due to ongoing public disorder in the area.

Reports suggest that missiles including bricks and smoke bombs have thrown at police.

Hundreds of people had earlier converged on Belfast City Hall, where they held a peaceful protest over the removal of the restrictions placed on the Union Flag.

Violence after flag protests on Friday evening, left nine police officers injured, with 18 people arrested.

A PSNI statement on Saturday morning stated 30 petrol bombs were thrown, while an attempt was made to hi-jack a bus in Newtownabbey

"A range of other missiles such as ball bearings, fireworks and masonry were also thrown. This resulted in eight police officers being injured. None of the injuries are life threatening however one female police officer required medical treatment at the scene by ambulance.

"It was reported that three attempted vehicle hijackings were made in the Beersbridge Road area. 14 arrests were made in this area during the disorder. Water canon was deployed but was not used.

"Police in C District cleared a protest that occurred in the Robbs Road area of Dundonald, close to the Ulster Hospital, at approximately 6pm last night. Three arrests were made in connection to this incident.

"A protest also occurred in the O'Neill Road area of Newtownabbey which lasted for several hours. Missiles such as bottles and bricks were thrown at police for a time, resulting in one police officer being injured. His injury was not life threatening.

"Police received a report that an attempt was made to hijack a bus in the area and a commercial premises on the O'Neill Road was broken into by several masked men who damaged the property and stole a sum of money. One person was arrested during this disorder."

The PSNI statement added: "Police will be seeking further arrests in the coming days in relation to the disorder.

"Anyone with any information about any of these incidents is asked to contact their local police station on 0845 600 8000.
