Johnson City, NY (WBNG Binghamton) Parents of a 2-year-old child learn their babysitter's been arrested for drugs, and the child could have been in danger.
33-year-old Theresa Sunderland may have called herself a daycare provider, but after speaking with the New York State Office of Children and Family Services, we learned that Sunderland was not registered, licensed or enrolled to be a daycare provider outside of her home.
The Broome County Special Investigation Unit Task Force arrested Sunderland Thursday after a nearly two-month investigation and a "no knock" search warrant in Johnson City.
At 130 Bernice Street, the SIU found Sunderland was in possession of roughly five ounces of both powder and crack cocaine, $250, and a digital scale.
The estimated street value of the drugs is $14,000.
At the time of the search, Sunderland was babysitting a two-year-old child.
"Upon the execution of the search warrant, the sergeant in charge of the Special Investigation Unit told me that there was in fact a 2-year-old and was close enough where it could have reached and had access to the cocaine," said Binghamton Police Chief, Joseph Zikuski.
The parents of the 2-year-old were called to pick up the child, and Child Protective Services was notified.
Sunderland was arraigned in the Village of Johnson City on charges of Criminal Possession of a controlled substance in the second degree a class A felony, two count of Criminal Possession of a controlled substance in the third degree a class b felony, and misdemeanor Endangering the Welfare of a Child.
She is still in custody at the Broome County Jail.
