Guns don't kill people - Murphysboro American

  • I've said this before and I'll say it until the day I die -- GUNS DON'T KILL PEOPLE; PEOPLE KILL PEOPLE.
That statement is being written today because of the words internationally-known sportscaster Bob Costas spoke Sunday during halftime of the Eagles/Cowboys NFL game.
Costas talked about gun control in light of the murder/suicide deaths of Kansas City Chief linebacker Jovan Belcher and Belcher's girlfriend, Kasandra Perkins.
Belcher killed Perkins, 22, Saturday and then himself with a gunshot to the head after driving to the practice field at Arrowhead Stadium.
At this point, not much is known about the reasons why.
Costas, though, tried to blame the lack of gun control on the murder and suicide.
Quoting Fox Sports columnist Jason Whitlock, Costas said: "'If Jovan Belcher didn't possess a gun, he and Kasandra Perkins would both be alive today.'"
That's the most absurd thing I have ever heard. The gun didn't kill either one of them. Belcher did the killing. Guns may be a tool or an instrument to killing, but they can't pull the trigger themselves. It takes a person to do that.
Using Costas' logic, if that gun killed those two people, then why not arrest that gun, put it on trial and hang it. Absurd, you say. Well it makes about as much sense as Costas' statement.
If anything, the killing of Perkins should throw support to concealed carry, where people have a right to carry arms (after passing proper certification and approval procedures).
Missouri has concealed carry. Illinois does not.
Allow me to put this before you: Had Perkins being carrying a gun -- which by law she could have in Missouri -- she might possibly be alive today? At least her chances would have been better.
I believe in a person's right to bear arms, as established by our U.S. Constitution and our Founding Fathers.
People on the opposite end of the spectrum always cry foul, when someone is hurt or killed by a gun. They also point to criminals who manage someway to get one.
First of all, it is illegal for any felon in any state to possess a gun. But they do. And regardless of any laws passed by our legislators criminals will always find a way to get around the laws.
A person who uses force or a weapon only understands a bigger force or a bigger weapon. If anyone ever tried to break into my house, he would be met by a "big weapon."
It's time to for people like Bob Costas to wake up and start smelling the roses before those roses start growing above them.
