More than a hundred pictures of homicide victims lined the lobby of the UIC forum Saturday while family members gathered to comfort and support each other.
Cook County State's Attorney Anita Alvarez greeted many of them as she prepared a ceremony to honor those who have been killed and those who struggle to move on with their lives during various stages of grief.
"It may have been 10 years ago, six months ago, but on a day like today, the memories are like yesterday," Alvarez said Saturday.
Cook County State's Attorney's office began the memorial 23 years ago as a way for family and friends of murder victims to come together. Many of those who attend are also Survivors of violent acts.
Participants lit candles to remember the lives of those who have been taken.
"When I see their pictures and I think of their families-- how difficult it was for them to go through the process " Alvarez said she and her staff want to remind friends and family members of victims that they are working hard around the clock to bring those responsible to justice.
"We understand that each and every life has value-- just one death is too much to bear."
