Judge directed to probe killing of 9 people in fake encounters

* Counsel alleges Chuhng police arrested clients sons, killed them in fake encounters

LAHORE: Lahore High Court Justice Mazahar Ali Akbar Naqvi on Wednesday directed the Lahore sessions judge to conduct inquiry on killing of nine people in fake police encounters in a single day and submit report within a week.

Justice Naqvi directed the sessions judge to convene inquiry about the encounters after associating the petitioner as well as the police.

The judge was hearing a petition submitted by Salama Bibi of Chuhng, whose five sons were killed in a fake police encounter.

On Wednesday, the home secretary, the inspector general police, the advocate general Punjab, the CIA SP and SSP (operations) appeared before the court.

The petitioners counsel said that the Punjab police killed nine people in a day and later claimed that they were proclaimed offenders. He alleged that on September 19 the Chuhng police killed Malik Imran, Malik Jamshaid and Malik Awais in a fake encounter and on the same day Malik Zahid, Malik Amjad and Malik Ramzan alias Jani were also killed in the Saddar Burewala police precincts in Vehari.

He said in the third incident the police killed Shahid Adnan and Zahid in the jurisdiction of Abadpur police, District Rahim Yar Khan. He also said that several days had passed but the police did not hand over bodies of to their families.

He also alleged that Zar Muhammad had occupied the house of the petitioner where she had been living for last ten years.

On behalf of the police, two contradictory statements were given. One statement read that the sons of the petitioner killed Zar, on the other hand the SSP (operations) said that some unidentified people killed Zar Muhammad and FIR had been registered against them.

He said but the names of the petitioners sons were included in the accused list later.

The judge remarked that prima facie it seemed that all have been manoeuvred in order to bring on record sufficient material against sons of the petitioner.

The counsel alleged that Chuhng police had arrested her sons and killed them in fake encounters. He said that the petitioner made every effort to lodge murder cases but the police did not take action. He requested the court to take action against those responsible officials involved in the fake encounters.
