Jovan Belcher suicide, murder: NFL linebacker was member of anti-violence ... - Examiner.com

On Dec. 1, 2012, Jovan Belcher, a linebacker for the Kansas City Chiefs, committed suicide at the team's Arrowhead Stadium training facility, after killing his girlfriend at their Kansas City home. The NFL athlete, who earned a degree in child development and family relations, also belonged to a group dedicated to non-violence.

According to USA Today, while attending the University of Maine, Belcher was a member of Males Athletes Against Violence.

In order to be accepted into the group, members were required to sign a pledge vowing to never perpetrate violence against women, and to stand up to those who did.

According to Kansas City Police, Belcher's girlfriend, Kassandra Perkins, 22, was shot and killed at the home she shared with Belcher and their 3 month old daughter. Less than an hour later, Belcher shot himself in front of team coach Romeo Crennel and the Chiefs' general manager, Scott Pioli.

Sports Illustrated reports that prior to pulling the trigger, Belcher thanked the two men.

Jack Cosgrove, Maine's head football coach, told USA Today, "Jovan was one of those young men that we have such great memories of here… His impact on this program was boundless…"

Mike Brusko, one of Belcher's Maine teammates and also a member of Male Athletes Against Violence told the publication while holding back tears, "Right now, the immediate reaction is disbelief. It's something that you could never imagine… I am incredibly thankful for the memories of him that I have and the person that I got to know. It's just beyond comprehension…"

The Greenwich Times reports that police have not released a motive for the murder-suicide, only saying that Belcher and Perkins had been arguing recently.
