Two men arrested in Naas after drug seizure worth estimated €83000 - RTE.ie

The operation was part of an ongoing investigation into the illegal drug trade in the Naas area.

Detectives stopped and searched a car yesterday afternoon when €34,000 worth of cannabis resin was found.

In a follow-up operation yesterday an apartment was searched where cocaine and cannabis with an estimated street value of €83,000 was recovered.

The two men, aged 40 and 41, were detained under Section 2 of the Criminal Justice (Drug Trafficking) Act 1996.

One of the men detained was released without charge this morning while the second man remains in custody.

A file will now be prepared for the information of the Director of Public Prosecutions.

17-year-old shot in head among 2 killed in Chicago - Sacramento Bee

CHICAGO -- A 17-year-old boy who was shot in the head was among two people killed in Chicago at the start of the weekend. Shootings across the city also wounded six people, who were expected to survive.

The teen, Derrick Davis, was killed one block from his home in the South Side Pill Hill neighborhood. The Cook County Medical Examiner's office says he was shot Friday evening. Police say no one else was wounded in that shooting and no one was in custody.

The other fatal shooting took place on the West Side. Police say the assailant approached 33-year-old Mushun Franklin on foot in the East Garfield Park neighborhood and shot him in the torso and neck.

Police are searching for a man who has committed obscene acts outside homes in three Perth suburbs.

In the latest incident the man was seen standing naked outside a woman's unit in Wall Street Maylands around midnight last night.

Police say he was shining a torch on himself while committing an obscene act.

It is believed the same man, aged 35 to 40, is responsible for similar incidents in Como and Glendalough in the past few months.

21 people killed in Iraq after double explosion - RTE.ie

Car bombs and a suicide attack in two Iraqi towns north of Baghdad have left at least 21 people dead.

No group claimed responsibility for the attacks.

However, Iraqi officials blame most of the sectarian violence that has killed nearly 2,000 people since April on Sunni Islamist insurgents linked to al-Qaeda.

Officials said two car bombs exploded and a suicide bomber in another vehicle detonated his explosives in a food market in the mostly Shia Muslim town of Jadidat al-Shatt in Diyala province, which is 40km north of Baghdad.

The triple blasts left 13 dead and more than 50 wounded among the wreckage of fruit and vegetable stalls, local officials and police said.

Another car bomb hit a market in the religiously-mixed town of Taji, 20km north of Baghdad, killing at least eight more people.

Two men have been charged over the discovery of a gun, ammunition and drugs in a car in Dandenong South, in Melbourne's south-eastern suburbs.

Police found the items during a routine vehicle search on the corner of Hammond Road and the Dandenong Bypass early this morning.

A 24-year-old man from Dandenong has been charged with firearm offences, three counts of resisting police and possession of amphetamines.

A 31-year-old Frankston man has also been charged with drug and weapon offences.

They will appear in the Dandenong Magistrates' Court today.

32 people killed, 50 infected by yellow fever in Sudan - The Guardian Nigeria

SUDANESE Health Ministry has disclosed that 32 people were killed and 50 others were infected by yellow fever in the country's Central and South Darfur states,

"According to the results of lab tests together with the reports sent by the health teams in the two states on cases of infection with fever and bleeding, the number of infected people amounted to 84 and 32 of them died until Tuesday," Xinhua quoted a local paper, Al-Sahafa daily, as saying.

The ministry said it has taken necessary measures to prevent the spread of the disease and lessen the mortality rate via provision of all the required medications to treat the disease and combat the vector mosquitoes.

The ministry said it has coordinated with the World Health Organisation (WHO) to provide yellow fever vaccines to cover the areas of infection.

Recent media reports said six people died and 10 others were infected with an unknown fever in South Darfur State.

A fugitive who had been on the run for almost 12 years was arrested in Swissvale today by the U.S. marshals fugitive task force of Western Pennsylvania, according to a press release.

Neal Jones, 56, was wanted on an Allegheny County bench warrant issued April 27, 2001 for multiple counts of possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance, as well as two other warrants issued that year for drug offenses.

Mr. Jones was among 10 Mon Valley suspects connected to Tremaine Briston's drug ring said to have distributed $7 million of drugs during a three-year investigation, authorities said. Mr. Jones was believed to have fled the Pittsburgh area shortly after posting bond in this case, authorities said.

Authorities said he was arrested without incident and is being held at the Allegheny County Jail.

Mr. Jones provided an alias name at the time of arrest and possessed a California ID card marked David Neal, authorities said.

Officers from Grampian Police found quantities of diamorphine and cannabis in the Bucksburn area of Aberdeen on Friday, following an intelligence-led operation.

The force said a 43-year-old man was arrested and is due to appear at Aberdeen Sheriff Court on Monday.

Dylan Escalanti went before Judge Gregory Stewart at the Yuma County Justice Court to be read his formal charges.

The 33-year old is suspected of beating his girlfriend with a frying pan last week.

Judge Stewart said during Escalanti's domestic altercation, Escalanti had beaten his girlfriend with a frying pan in the bedroom and bathroom.

Stewart said Escalanti had also attempted to attack her with a knife in the living room.

His girlfriend was taken to Yuma Regional Medical Center for multiple fractures to her skull, neck and hand as a result of the assault.

Escalanti faces three felony counts of attempted first degree murder and one felony count for kidnapping per domestic violence.

Escalanti's bond was reset at one million dollars and is due back in court next month.

The arrest of a man on drug charges in Naperville this week led to the discovery of more than $1 million in homegrown marijuana at the mans Chicago residence, police said Friday.

Naperville police arrested 32-year-old Ronald Sanchez Thursday afternoon on charges of unlawful delivery of marijuana, but a search warrant executed later at Sanchezs house in Chicago uncovered a sophisticated marijuana growing operation, authorities said.

Over 300 mature plants and several large plastic bins of processed marijuana was discovered, according to police.

In total, the recovered drugs have a street value of $1,197,800, police said.

Sanchez, of the 3200 block of North Oleander in Chicago, was formally charged with production of cannabis plants and possession with intent to deliver.

Naperville police were assisted by the DuPage and Cook County states attorneys offices in the investigation.

About 60 people killed in Syrian airstrikes, say activists - Los Angeles Times

BEIRUT -- Syrian government forces continued airstrikes on the northern city of Maarat Numan in Idlib province on Tuesday, leaving an estimated 60 people dead, activists said.

Of those killed, more than 40 reportedly were civilians, including a woman and her five children, said Idlib activist Alaa Aldeen Yousef.

There was no immediate response from the government to the activists' charge, which could not be independently verified.

The air attacks by MiG fighter jets, described as some of the worst in Idlib in months, began overnight hours after Free Syrian Army rebels launched an offensive to take the city from government control by attacking several army checkpoints.

"The fighting won't end till all the checkpoints are gone," said Ahmad Halabi, an activist in the city. "The planning has been ongoing for two months but we were waiting to unite the ranks and get the weapons."

WILDOMAR: 6 squatters arrested on drug charges - Press-Enterprise

Six people found squatting were arrested on drug charges in Wildomar, according to a sheriff's official.

Deputies found the suspects in an abandoned home around 5:30 p.m. Thursday, March 14, in the 35000 block of Portola Place, according to sheriff's Sgt. David Cardoza.

"(Investigators) determined the initial homeowner had lost the residence through foreclosure, and none of the current occupants had a legal right to be on the property," Cardoza wrote in a press release.

Peter Benavidez, 30, of Wildomar, was arrested on suspicion of parole violation and being under the influence of drugs. Lisa Pack, 29, a transient, was arrested on suspicion of possessing methamphetamine and stolen property.

Three arrested after Whitley Co. K-9 sniffs out drugs - WBIR-TV

Three people were arrested in Whitley County after officers said a routine traffic stop led to $500 worth of marijuana and nearly $200 worth of pills.

Colan Harrell, the Whitley County Sheriff, said officers stopped a car on Highway 92 East, where the driver, Kathy Price, 45, failed a field sobriety test. Harrel said Price admitted to taking hydrocodone and Percocet.

Two passengers were also arrested on drug possession charges. Lester Watson, 36, and Ronnie Croley, 49, were booked at the Whitley County Detention Center.

The Sheriff said the keen nose of a K-9 netted a total of 15 hydrocodone pills, 4 Percocet pills, and a quarter-pound of marijuana.

Eight People Killed In Cambodia Market Fire - Sky News

Eight people, including four children, have been killed in a fire that tore through a popular night market in the Cambodian tourist town of Siem Reap.

Two others were seriously injured in the blaze, which raged for about two hours early on Saturday, said Sath Nady, chief of Siem Reap police.

The children, aged between nine and 14, were sleeping with their families on the upper floor of a building on the premises when the fire broke out, he said.

"Eight people from two families died in the fire. They could not find their way out."

The fire, apparently caused by an electrical fault, also destroyed more than 100 stalls selling souvenirs, and forced the market to be closed.

Three arrested in Merrill drug bust - WAOW

Three people were arrested in Merrill after officers discovered a large amount of drugs and distribution materials.

According to a news release from the Merrill Police Department, officers arrested Cassiopia Conlin, 23, of Merrill Sunday night after she was pulled over for a traffic violation. Officers say they searched her car and found "a large amount of methamphetamine, heroin, and LSD" as well as items used to distribute drugs.

Two people inside the car, Jimmie Joannon, 38, of Merrill, and Danny Hanson, 49, of Wausau, were also arrested.

The three now face a number of charges including possessing drugs with intent to deliver, possessing drug paraphernalia, and bail jumping.

The three suspects appeared in Lincoln County Court Tuesday afternoon. Bond was set at $7,500 for Conlin and Joannon. Danny Hanson's bond was set at 20,000 dollars.

All three are scheduled to appear in court again next month.

Two arrested 'trying to steal drug mule's body' - Scotsman

Mlawa Ndumbogane, 33, and Zimbabwean Mufungo Ngara, 39, were caught when they tried to take the body from a funeral parlour in Harare last week. The dead man has been identified as Ally Omari Mpili, of Tanzania.

State prosecutors say Mpili swallowed 80 capsules containing 1.4 kg of heroin in Tanzania before boarding a bus to Harare. The capsules ruptured in his?intestines, killing him.

The official Herald news­paper reported: "Mpili, it is alleged, sought accommodation and slept in Braeside, Harare, where he died the same night."

Suspecting Mpili had ingest­ed drugs, police took his body to the funeral parlour, while they arranged for a post-mortem at Harare's Parirenyatwa Hospital. When Ndumbogane and Ngara tried to collect the corpse, under­takers alerted the police.

A government pathologist found the capsules in Mpili's?intestines the following day.

The two men appeared in court on Monday and were remanded in custody until 12?November.

CASSELBERRY, FL - Police have identified three of the victims in the central Florida beauty salon shooting, including a manager who filed a restraining order against the gunman.

Casselberry police say 44-year-old Marcia Santiago is in serious condition in the hospital after Thursday's shooting. Police say Santiago and the gunman, 36-year-old Bradford Baumet, were supposed to appear in court Thursday on the restraining order.

Santiago's relationship with Baumet is not immediately clear.

Police say Baumet opened fire in the salon in Casselberry, about 15 miles northeast of Orlando, killing three women and wounding Santiago before killing himself at a nearby home.

Police identified two other victims as customer 52-year-old Gladys Cabrera and salon worker 29-year-old Noelia Gonzalez-Brito. Police did not immediately identify the fourth woman who died.

Drug bust nets two arrests, 295 pills - Ironton Tribune

SOUTH POINT — Two people were arrested late Thursday after a drug raid at the Southern Hills Motel in South Point.

Emmanuel Javon Anderson, 33, who gave an address of 721 Sixth Ave., Huntington W.Va., was charged with two counts of third-degree felony trafficking in drugs stemming from a secret indictment handed down last week by a Lawrence County Grand Jury.

Heather Ratliff, 29, of 23A Private Drive 2824, South Point, was also indicted secretly by the grand jury and faces three counts of third-degree trafficking in drugs and one count of fourth degree trafficking in drugs.

According to a prepared statement from the Lawrence County Drug And Major Crimes Task Force, 295 oxycodone pills with a street value of more than $8,800 were seized during the raid at the motel. More than $1,600 in cash was also confiscated.

Ironton Police, South Point Police and the Lawrence County Sheriff's Office all assisted in the raid and ensuing arrests.

Two arrested for drugs and traffic infractions - Buffalo News

PERRY – Two Batavia men were arrested on a variety of charges after a traffic stop on Church Street here about 1:30 a.m. Saturday, the Wyoming County Sheriff's Office announced Monday.

Deric J. Hewitt, 28, and Sean M. Miller, 27, were arrested after the car Hewitt was driving was stopped. After Hewitt failed field sobriety tests deputies found marijuana and oxycodone pills in his car and he and Miller were taken into custody. Miller was charged with unlawful possession of marijuana and consumption of alcohol in a motor vehicle.

Hewitt was charged with criminal possession of a controlled substance in the seventh degree, unlawful possession of marijuana, driving while intoxicated, driving with a blood-alcohol content of more than 0.08 per cent, inadequate brake lights and failing to notify the state Department of Motor Vehicles of his change of address. Hewitt's car was towed and he and Miller were released to a third party pending a Perry Village Court session March 27.

Rescue workers pulled out more bodies from debris at the headquarters of Mexican state oil giant Pemex, after a powerful explosion killed at least 33 people.

The explosion also threw a spotlight onto the state-run company's poor safety record.

Scenes of confusion and chaos outside the tower block in Mexico City have dealt another blow to Pemex's image, just as Mexico's new president is seeking to court outside investment for the 75-year-old monopoly.

The blast occurred at a Pemex building next to the 50-storey skyscraper and senior officials said 33 people had so far been confirmed dead.

A further 121 were injured, said the company's chief executive, Emilio Lozoya.

Officials have been unable to say how many people may still be trapped in the wreckage of the office block, which remains cordoned off.

A military paramedic at the scene said there are likely many and he expected the death toll to keep rising.

Hornell Police allegedly discover drugs during bench warrant arrest - Hornell Evening Tribune

Five Hornell residents were arrested Friday for alleged possession of cocaine, marijuana, hypodermic instruments and pills, according to police.

Charged with felony fifth-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance and also with criminal possession of a hypodermic instrument were Katherine E. Kinne, 22; Lauren E. Sick, 32; Brian P. Shinebarger, 30; Jacob R. Fronk, 21; and Mary E. Kinne, 56, all of 57 Fulton St.

Sick and Shinebarger were also charged with resisting arrest.

Police arrested Kinne and Sick on a bench warrant charging them with failure to appear. The two told police there were drugs in the house, possibly trying to avoid arrest, according to Investigator Todd Giglio. A small amount of drugs, valued at about $500, was found.

He said the five residents all tried to place blame on each other, resulting in their arrests.

All five are being held at Steuben County Jail in lieu of bail, according to Giglio. The investigation continues, police said.
 

Paramus Police Encounter Obscene Language: Results In Marijuana Arrest t - ParamusPost.com

On 12/27/12 at 1115pm, Paramus Police Lt. Sal LaFerlita was patrolling the south lot of the Garden State Plaza when his attention was drawn to a man who was yelling obscene language. Lt. LaFerlita approached the man, later identified as 19 year old Joel Berliner of Englewood, and asked him to refrain from using such language.

Mr. Berliner refused the request from the officer and became belligerent. Lieutenant LaFerlita approached Mr. Berliner and detected an odor of marijuana coming from him. Further investigation by Lt. LaFerlita revealed that Mr. Berliner was in possession of a small bag of marijuana. He was placed under arrest and transported to Paramus Police Headquarters. He was charged with possession of marijuana under 50 grams. He was later released pending court appearance.

Clemson students among 19 arrested in drug bust - WIS

PICKENS COUNTY, SC (WYFF/WIS) - A drug investigation lasting more than six months in Pickens County led to 19 people arrested, many whom investigators say are Clemson students.

Investigators seized more than $6,300 in cash and  nearly 300 grams of high grade marijuana, with a street value of more than $5,000.  They also seized dozens of weapons and a machine used to make fake ID's.

More than 60 warrants were served.

"What it will do, I hope, is prevent some future incidents from happening where people are dealing drugs and bad things are going to happen," said Pickens County Assistant Sheriff Tim Morgan.  

"So it gets some folks off the street some of the dealing will stop from these people and maybe some other folks will take heed and wise up."

Deputies are still searching for four more suspects.

Drugs, cash, gun seized in Temecula raid, seven arrested - North County Times

TEMECULA, Calif. — A narcotics raid Thursday at a home near Wine Country netted a quarter pound of methamphetamine; two pounds of marijuana; a wad of cash; a loaded, unregistered handgun and several hundred prescription pills.

Seven people were arrested in connection with the raid, which uncovered items used in the sale of drugs, according to a news release written by Temecula police Sgt. Vance Stolte.

All seven were booked into Southwest Detention Center in French Valley on a host of counts.

The seven arrested were identified by Stolte as John August Abraham, 51, of Temecula; Kelly Ann Abraham, 50, of Temecula; Alison Addison, 43, of Temecula; Alfonso Cueva, 47, of Pauma Valley; Mark Smith, 41, of Temecula; Nicholas Abraham, 20, of Temecula; and Michael Johnson, 40, of Murrieta.

The raid was conducted by the Temecula Police Department's Special Enforcement Team, along with the department's Problem Oriented Policing team and the Southwest Corridor Narcotics Task Force.

"No", Wisnu Agung Prasetya said, when asked if he used drugs, as quoted by tribunnews.com.

Wisnu said that he would report to his superior on media speculation that he was arrested and released without charges for using drugs.

The Bengkulu Police earlier issued a statement denying the arrest report.

"After we checked with our officers, we can report that no arrest was made of the suspect Wisnu AP." Bengkulu Police spokesman Sr. Comr. Heri Wiyanto said.

Presidential spokesman Julian Aldrin Pasha said that he would verify the report. "I will check first because I don't remember all the names of assistants and special staff experts for the President," he said as quoted by tribunews.com.

An Elmore County jury found a Wetumpka man guilty of production of obscene matter Wednesday.

Johnny W. McRay, 57, of 139 Cardinal Court was found guilty in Elmore County Circuit Court. Judge John Bush presided over the case.

McRay was arrested by the Elmore County Sheriffs Office in May 2011 when it was discovered he had three videotapes with obscene material featuring a 15-year-old female on his home computer, according to Jenny Hamilton of the district attorneys office. McRay was convicted of one count of production of obscene matter for each video.

Hamilton said the sentencing range is 10 years to life in prison for each count. An official sentencing date has not been set, but Hamilton said McRay possibly could be sentenced Nov. 6, when Bush has his next sentencing docket.

MARION HEIGHTS — Two people were killed and at least one other person seriously injured in a two vehicle crash Monday afternoon on Route 54 near Marion Heights in Northumberland County.

The two cars - a silver GMC Envoy and a black Dodge pick-up - collided while they were traveling on Route 54 near the intersection with Park Avenue, according to police at the scene. Both cars had Pennsylvania license plates.

No further details about the accident were immediately available.

Two people, both passengers in the Envoy, were pronounced dead at the scene by Northumberland County James Kelley. The identities of the victims were not released Monday.

At least one other crash victim was airlifted by a medical helicopter to Geisinger Medical Center in Danville. Another person was taken from the scene in an ambulance.

Route 54 was closed between Park Avenue in Mount Carmel Township and Route 61 from 12:15 until 4:30 as police worked to examine the scene.

Two men have been arrested after $154,000 worth of drugs stayed hidden at Auckland International Airport for almost four years.

Police found 200 grams of methamphetamine at the airport in November 2012.

Customs say the drugs were found in a Customs-controlled area, but will not disclose how they were concealed.

A spokesperson said on Thursday the men were questioned at Auckland International Airport in February 2009, but authorities did not have enough evidence to detain them.

Customs said it cannot comment further because the matter is before the court.

Police said they tracked the pair for several months and arrested them last week when they linked them to the package of drugs.

The men, aged 54 and 36, will appear in the Wellington District Court next week.

TUCSON - The past three days have been busy for Tucson Sector Border Patrol agents.

Most recently, agents pulled over a vehicle near the State Route 86 checkpoint Sunday. They say a background check revealed that both the driver and passenger had warrants out for their arrest.

Also, agents say they found a stolen, loaded .45-caliber weapon and 34 grams of meth in the vehicle.

Also Sunday, at the I-19 checkpoint, two U.S. citizens were arrested, after a canine team showed interest in the trunk of their vehicle and agents discovered two people hiding inside it.

On Frida, agents working the same I-19 checkpoint arrested a Mexican national. He was traveling in a commercial shuttle van when agents found a pound of methamphetamine taped to the inside of his clothes. The drugs are valued at $10,000.

2 people killed in separate road accidents - The Asian Age

Two persons have been killed in two separate road accidents in the city on Saturday night.
In the first incident, a 35-year-old man died after being hit by an unidentified vehicle in Nand Nagri in northeast Delhi.

Monu was returning from an engagement function in New Ashok Nagar on his motorcycle when he was hit by an unknown vehicle. Monu was rushed to GTB hospital, where he was declared brought dead.
In the second incident, a 40-year-old man died after being hit by a car on Saturday night in Ambedkar Nagar of southeast Delhi. The deceased, identified as Udal, was crossing the road when the incident happened.
Ravi Rajoria, 20, victim's nephew, the accident happened when he, along with his uncle and his grandfather Rajbir, was returning from a relative's marriage late Saturday night. While crossing a road in Madangir, a speeding vehicle heading towards Khanpur hit Udal at around 12.50 am, he said.

Three men have been arrested after thousands of pounds worth of drugs were recovered on a Bradford motorway.

Detectives from West Yorkshire Police's Crime Division executed eight search warrants on Thursday in Bradford, Leeds and Milton Keynes, in connection with the discovery of drugs in July.

On Monday, July 16, officers stopped a car travelling along the M606 out of Bradford and found half a kilo of heroin inside with an estimated street value of around £20,000.

On Thursday officers arrested a 40-year-old man from Girlington, Bradford, a 40-year-old man from Rodley, Leeds, and a 29-year-old man from Milton Keynes, on suspicion of conspiring to supply class A drugs.

They have been interviewed and released on police bail pending further inquiries.

Team's obscene message written on arms of wrestlers - KCCI Des Moines

An Iowa High School Athletic Association official said Friday that two high schools are working out what should be done about an obscene message sent by one high school wrestling team to another.

The message was written one letter at a time on the arms of the wrestlers lined up for a picture of the West Marshall High School team in State Center.

The taunt was meant for the Don Bosco Catholic School team in Gilbertville. It was taken before the teams wrestled on Tuesday.

The photo has already been removed from online.

Association assistant executive Alan Beste said he's spoken to both schools' principals. He said the association will step in only if the schools can't resolve the issue.

Capitola man arrested on suspicion of drug sales, deputies say - San Jose Mercury News

SOQUEL - A 25-year-old Capitola man was arrested Sunday after deputies found 12.75 grams of methamphetamine, packaging materials and burglary tools in the blue BMW he was driving, the Santa Cruz County Sheriff's Office said.

Deputies stopped the 1998 BMW driven by Steven Michael Romero near 41st Avenue and Gross Road about 6:30 p.m after recognizing him as a person on probation with a search clause, deputy April Skalland said.

He also was wanted because deputies found drugs at his home during a probation search when Romero was not there, Skalland said.

Romero had a slim jim and other tools used to break into cars, she said.

He was arrested on suspicion of several drug charges, including possession for sales, possession of burglary tools and violating probation, records show.

Three arrested with drug charges - Northwest Herald

On Jan. 18, the sheriff's office executed a search warrant at 7512 Hemlock St. in Crystal Lake. During the search, Martin M. Dunn, Joseph M. Munts and Angel De Jesus Marin were arrested for multiple drug charges.

Sheriff deputies seized approximately 1,710 grams of marijuana, two ecstasy pills, two cannabis sativa plants, a digital scale, packaging materials, drug paraphernalia, and about $4,000 in cash. Sheriff authorities estimate the street value of the drugs to be worth about $17,000.

Dunn, 27, of Crystal Lake, faces the following charges: possession of cannabis, possession with intent to deliver, unlawful possession of a controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia, and production of cannabis sativa plants.

Munts, 26, of 1022 Clay St., Woodstock, faces the following charges: possession of cannabis, possession with intent to deliver, possession of drug paraphernalia, and production of cannabis sativa plants.

De Jesus Marin, 26, town unknown, faces two charges: possession of cannabis and possession of drug paraphernalia.

MELAKA - Police have arrested an employee of a shelter home here to facilitate investigation in connection with allegations of extreme obscenity.

 Melaka CID chief ACP Raja Shahrom Raja Abdullah said the suspect, 31, was remanded for four days after turning himself in at Melaka police headquarters yesterday.  

 "Police have opened investigation paper after reports were made by three students between 13 and 14 years-old staying at the shelter home," he said in astatement here today.    

Once completed, the investigation papers would be referred to Bukit Aman and the Deputy Public Prosecutor's Office for further action.  

 The case is being investigated under Section 377 E of the Penal Code E for stimulating children to commit extreme obscenity.    

An English language newspaper yesterday reported that Welfare and Social Organisation Malaysia (Perbak) urged police to investigate allegations of sexual abuse after three children were forced to do obscene acts in front of an employee of the shelter home.  - Bernama

Man Charged with Making Obscene Calls to Schools - wmbb

The Bay County Sheriff's Office was contacted on October 26, 2012, by the principal of a local school after she received a phone call from a man who claimed to be sexually abusing his three year old daughter.

Subsequent investigation revealed that similar calls were also made to other schools and businesses in Bay County. Working with the Lynn Haven Police Department, the Bay County Sheriff's Office Criminal Investigations Division was able to develop Stephen Michael Groo as a suspect.

Contact was made today with Groo. Groo stated during an interview that he placed hundreds of phone calls, but hung up unless his call was answered by a woman. He stated that he spoke to about twenty women.

Stephen Michael Groo, DOB 8-12-85, of 19521 Brandon Road, Fountain, was arrested and charged with False Report of Child Abuse and two counts of Obscene Telephone Calls.

Strike death cop-out - Citizen

Instead the 41-year-old driver's assistant from Cape Town was fatally wounded when a rock  was thrown into his vehicle.

In response, SA Transport and Allied Workers' Union (Satawu) spokesman Vincent Masoga said those who killed Stewart do not belong in the labour movement.

 "No one associated with us can be involved with violence," he said.

Yet local reporters said the culprits seemed to be Satawu members. Masoga said if  Satawu members were found to be involved they would face internal disciplinary processes. Actually they should be charged with murder.

Although Masoga's apparent disapproval of violence is welcome it is not enough.

 There is also the possibility that Satawu, which has been found legally liable for damages during previous violent protests, is merely trying to cover its back with this statement.

Those who organise strikes and whip up worker sentiment bear a heavy responsibility. This cannot be shirked with post facto disclaimers.

5 people killed in Southern Indiana mobile home fire - WRTV Indianapolis

CRAWFORD COUNTY, Ind. - A southern Indiana sheriff says an overnight mobile home fire believed started by a wood stove has killed five people in a small Ohio River town.

   Crawford County Sheriff Tim Wilkerson said three adults and two children died in early Thursday's fire near the town of Sulphur about 30 miles west of Louisville, Ky., WHAS reported.

   Wilkerson says two half-brothers and a girlfriend of one of the men died along with the 8-year-old daughter of one of the brothers and the woman's 3-year-old son. He broke the tragic news to about 10 of the victims' relatives by gathering them in a circle with a chaplain.

   County Emergency Management Director Larry Allen says everyone in the home died in the fire.

   Fire officials believe a wood stove started the fire.

Traffic stop leads to warrant, drug arrest - New Jersey Herald

MOUNT OLIVE — A 20-year-old passenger was arrested when the driver she was with was pulled over by police for making an illegal left hand turn, police said.

Megan L. Ranallo, of Bangor, Pa., was riding on Route 46 on Jan. 17 when Office George Jadue pulled the car over near the Village Green Mall. During the stop, Jadue was given consent to search the vehicle, but found no drugs.

However, during the investigation, Jadue learned that Ranallo had an active warrant out of Port Murray with bail set at $175. Ranallo was arrested and transported to police headquarters. At headquarters, Jadue found a marijuana cigarette in her possession.

He also then found multiple small bags of heroin on her. Ranallo was subsequently charged with possession of heroin, possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia and tampering with evidence.

Bail was set at $5,000 with 10 percent, but Ranallo was able to post, police said. Ranallo was released pending a court appearance.

A man was shot to death in front of a Northeast Philadelphia apartment complex this morning, and police said they have a suspect in custody in connection with the murder.

Cops said the man was outside the St. Ives apartment complex, on Riverside Drive near Woodhaven Road, at 11:38 a.m. when he was shot in the head. He was pronounced dead at the scene at 11:52 a.m. Police said they made an arrest in connection with the homicide and recovered the gun they believe was used, but the suspect has not been identified.

The victim, who is between 35 and 40 years old, also remained unidentified later Wednesday, and police did not report a motive.

In other gun violence news, a 34-year-old man walked into the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania just before 12:30 p.m. today with a gunshot wound to his left hand. Police said he was shot during a road-rage incident at 52nd and Race streets. The incident remains under investigation.

Earlier, the Syrian authorities agreed to cease fire in the country during Eid al-Adha. But despite this ceasefire was violated repeatedly, several explosions were committed, which killed civilians, including children.

Anti-government protests have continued in Syria for a year and half.

According to UN, the total number of victims of the conflict in Syria is nearing 30,000.
More than 230,000 have become refugees with around three million in need of humanitarian assistance. The Syrian authorities say they oppose the well-armed militants.

Caryville Man Charged with Distribution of Obscene Materials to Minors - wmbb

The Washington County Sheriff's Office reports the apprehension of a Caryville man for the distribution of obscene material to minors.

WCSO were alerted to the incident by a neighbor of the victims who observed pornographic materials being displayed while minors were present.  These materials were viewed by children 11 and 13 years of age on several different occasions.

WCSO executed a search warrant of the suspect's home at 4414 Chambers Street in Caryville.  During the search, investigators found several pornographic DVDs described by the victims as the ones viewed previously.

Arrested was Matthew Thomas McCarthy, 21 years old white male of Caryville, FL, on three counts of Distribution of Obscene Materials to Minors. McCarthy is currently in being held at the Washington County Jail.

Twelve people arrested in Perry County drug raid. - WDAM-TV

HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) -

A Friday morning drug raid in Perry County put 12 people behind bars.

The raid was the result of an investigation that had been going on for months.

In the raid 20 grams of crack cocaine, approximately $1400, and one vehicle was seized. All the suspects were from Perry County, with most of them coming from the Richton and Beaumont areas.

Charges ranged from possession of a controlled substance to sale of a controlled substance. The police departments from Richton, New Augusta, and Beaumont assisted Perry County in the raid.

"We're going to stop drugs in Perry County," said Jimmy Dale Smith, Sheriff Perry County. "It's something that is causing a problem here and we're going to do our best to put an end to it."

One of the suspects are being held without bond. The rest had their bond set at $35,000.

Arrests over drug warrants - This is South Wales

POLICE have carried out a series of drug warrants across Carmarthenshire this week.

Dyfed-Powys officers have also arrested and given warnings to some of those dealt with during the operation.

On Tuesday, December 18, a man was arrested in Carmel on suspicion of possession with intent to supply cannabis.

He has since been charged and appeared before magistrates on Wednesday.

On the same day, a warrant was carried out at Llys Caermedi, Carmarthen, where a quantity of drugs believed to be ketamine and herbal cannabis was seized.

A 19-year-old local man has been arrested and is on police bail.

In Ammanford a warrant was executed in Teglan Park, where a bag containing meow meow (mephadrone) was found and a 37-year-old local man given an adult caution for possession of the drug.

Police also gave a warning to a 26-year-old after a quantity of herbal cannabis was seized in High Street, Tumble.

QUETTA: Firing incidents in the provincial capital and in Chaman has left five people dead including one police official, DawnNews reported.

The police offical was killed along with three others injured, after unknown gunmen riding a motorcycle opened fire on them in Quetta.

They were taken to hospital, but the police official died upon arrival.

Elsewhere in a Pashtun dominated area, unknown gunmen opened fire on students from a madrassa, killing two of them.

Two other people were shot dead in Chaman, near the Pak-Afghan border, after unknown gunmen fired upon them. The two deceased were reported to be members of the Afghan police and had come to visit relatives when they were killed.

Four held for selling obscene footage - Times of India

They were arrested during a surprise raid by inspector Chandrasekar of Cyber Crime Cell of Coimbatore city police and his team at a mobile shop at Ramanathapuram in the city on Friday night.

The team also conducted a raid at a mobile shop at Bharathiyar road in Pappanaickenpalayam in the city and arrested K Saleem Raja, 23 of Pappanaickenpalayam and A Vaji Mohammed, 20 of Vagarayampalayam near Annur. They duo was handed over to Race Course police station who registered a case against them.

According to police, the shop owners had downloaded obscene footages from internet and charged Rs 50 every 1 GB from customers.

The police said college and schools students used to visit the mobile shops often. People in the locality informed the city police who instructed the team to conduct a surprise check.

The police have also seized two computers, two CPUs, keyboards, memory card readers and pen drivers from them.

Paso Robles police arrested two men early Saturday morning after they allegedly discovered narcotics in the men's car.

An officer stopped the car at 4:40 a.m. on Creston Road near Golden Hill Road for an equipment violation. The driver of the car, San Luis Obispo County resident Leonard Filipe Trujillo, 38, was driving under the influence of a controlled substance, police said.

During a search of the vehicle, a canine unit indicated that drugs were present in the driver and passenger seat areas, police said. A search allegedly uncovered 11 grams of methamphetamine and five grams of heroin, along with narcotics packaging material and other items used in the sale of drugs.

Trujillo was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of a controlled substance, possession and transportation of controlled substances for sale, possession for sale of narcotics and sales of controlled substances.

His passenger, Jason Todd Hopkins, 34, of Paso Robles, was arrested on suspicion of possession of narcotics.

Police said on Friday, officers from west division stopped a vehicle in the area of 178 Street and 100 Avenue – inside, an ounce of methamphetamine valued at $2800 was found, along with some cash.

Later, police searched a hotel suite in the west end, where they found and seized 629 grams (1.5 lbs) of crystal meth, valued at $50,000, 220 ml of GHB, valued at $1,110, a digital scale, packing and measuring cups, and cash.

As a result of the traffic stop, 43-year-old Kevin Goddard is facing one charge of possession for the purpose of trafficking methamphetamine and possession of the proceeds of crime under $5,000.

After the hotel room was searched, Michael Meyn, 32, and Melissa Fast, 23 were also arrested and charged.

Both are facing a total of five charges, including possession of meth and GHB for the purpose of trafficking, and weapons-related charges.

Mumbai, Nov 24:  Madhoo, the actress who suddenly rose to fame for her acting in Mani Ratnam's film Roja, has received an envelope by post containing obscene material with Ajay Mafatlal's name mentioned as sender, says a newspaper report. 
Ajay Mafatlal is  the 55-year-old scion of  Mafatlal family and he has ostensibly nothing to do with Madhoo, who resides at Malabar Hill with her husband.  

Madhoo told police that she received an envelope containing obscene material with Mafatlal's name mentioned as the sender.

Madhoo and her husband  said they have been inundated with obscene letters, and submitted a complaint with the Malabar Hill police around a month ago.

The couple told police that letters mentioned 'A Mafatlal' and one 'Mohammad Shakeel Qureshi', who is an acquaintance, as senders.

So far, police have given Mafatlal, 55, and Qureshi the benefit of doubt, as they found the names and addresses on the letters to be fakes. 

Two people killed when hit by cars following accident - FOX16.com

HOT SPRINGS, AR – Two people are dead after they were hit by cars following an accident. It happened just before midnight, Friday, in Hot Springs.

The victims are identified in Arkansas State Police reports as 21 year old Jayna Beverlin of Hot Springs and 32 year old Robert Haney of Hot Springs. Two other people were also injured in the series of crashes.

A report from Arkansas State Police says Beverlin was driving an eastbound car on the MLK Expressway in Hot Springs that hit the concrete divider wall and came to rest in the roadway. The 21 year old Beverlin was standing beside her wrecked car when it was hit by another vehicle, killing her. 32 year old Robert Haney had stopped to render aid in the initial accident. The impact that killed Beverlin also threw Haney over the divider wall where he was hit and killed by a westbound vehicle.

Police say the series of crashes happened on the MLK Expressway at Airport Road in Hot Springs.

Marathi actress files complaint as obscene pictures surface on internet - Daily Bhaskar

Pune: Famous Marathi actress Shruti has lodged a complaint with the Mumbai Police Crime Branch that some miscreant has uploaded obscene pictures of the actress on the internet. She has registered a case against unknown people.

The actress is originally from Pune. To her embarrasment, one of her family member showed her the pictures. She said people who are close to her are calling and she is troubled with the hullabaloo.

She said that these pictures are published without her consent. She suspected that some private photographer may have taken the pictures without her knowledge and posted them on the internet. She said that the pictures were taken when she was shooting a Tamil movie four years ago.

The director of the film Naan Avan Illai 2 producer Hitesh Jhabak said that even if the pictures were shot on the set they were the property of the film producer and that posting pictures was illegal. 

Police are investigating the matter. 

Texas Church Closed After Pastor Arrested For Drugs, Family Violence - KWTX

TEXAS CITY (January 27, 2013)—Baypoint Community Church in Texas City has closed after the arrest of its pastor for drug possession and family violence.

A bank has foreclosed on the Baypoint Community Church's property in Texas City.

The development came comes weeks after the church's pastor, Terry Gass, was accused of pushing his girlfriend out of his SUV.

Police found him and the SUV in the church's parking lot in November.

While he was being booked at city jail, police say they discovered cocaine wrapped in a dollar bill in his wallet.

Gass then said he was taking a temporary leave of absence, but two associate pastors then resigned.

Nine men arrested over drug raids in Glasgow's Maryhill area - BBC News

Nine men have been arrested after heroin and cocaine with an estimated street value of £1,700 was seized from properties in Glasgow's Maryhill area.

Strathclyde Police said the men, aged 17, 18, 32, 35, 35, 38, 38, 39 and 61, were held at eight properties on the Wyndford Estate on Friday morning.

They are expected to appear at Glasgow Sheriff Court next week.

The raids were part of Operation Myriad, a five-month campaign to tackle "issues that blight communities".

Det Insp Alan Hunter, of Strathclyde Police, said: "Today's operation demonstrates our commitment to cracking down on drugs.

"Its success is down to local people who've provided us with information after growing concern about drug dealing on their doorstep.

"Ridding our communities of drugs is a high priority for us and today's operation sends a clear message to those who're peddling their misery through fear and intimidation."

5 UB students arrested for drugs - WIVB

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) - Buffalo police have arrested five UB students on drug charges after executing a search warrant earlier this week on West Northrup Place.

Narcotics Detectives have arrested Cameron Hom, John Marchant, Jared Eder, Ethan Mirenberg and Michael Daley all 19-years-old, of West Northrup Place.

Detectives say the individuals accepted a controlled delivery of illegal drugs.

Charges for the five males range from Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance, Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance with the Intent to Sell, Unlawful Possession of Marijuana, and other charges.

Police say they seized cocaine, marijuana, pills and other illegal drugs as well as 3 guns and almost $800 in cash.

Buffalo police were assisted in the investigation by ICE and US Postal Inspectors.

Last month Buffalo police arrested 7 other individuals at another residence on West Northrup in connection with illegal drug activity.

Three arrested on drug charges at Queensbury motel - Glens Falls Post-Star

QUEENSBURY -- Three New York City residents were arrested late Friday after a raid at a Route 9 motel, police said.

The trio were charged after police searched a room at Budget Inn and seized an ounce of crack cocaine, 25 packets of heroin and nearly $2,000 in cash, according to State Police.

Investigators believe the trio had been selling drugs from the motel room.

Charged with third-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, a felony, were:

* Augustus I. Brown, 39, of the Bronx.

* Shamell Brown, 21, of the Bronx.

* Craig A. Simmons, 26, of Manhattan.

In addition to the cash that was seized, police found evidence that indicated the trio had wired about $2,000 from the nearby Wal-Mart store to an address in New York City.

All three were arraigned and sent to Warren County Jail for lack of bail. The case was handled by State Police from the Queensbury station, State Police Community Narcotics Enforcement Team and Warren County Sheriff's Office.

2 people killed after LIRR train strikes car - NJ.com

Two people were killed this morning when an out-of-service Long Island Rail Road train collided with a car on the tracks, according to a report on MyFoxNY.com.

The two people killed were in the car, the report said, though their bodies were burned beyond recognition and they have not yet been identified.

The train's engineer, who survived the accident unhurt, told MTA police that the driver of the car was on a cell phone when they drove around a train gate and onto the tracks. The engineer pulled the brakes, but was traveling at 80 mph and could not stop in time.

The accident occurred on the LIRR Ronkonkoma Branch near the Brentwood station, according to the report. Service was suspended on the line during the day, and there were some cancellations and delays this evening.

Pirated and obscene DVDs worth Rs 10 crore seized in Chennai - Deccan Chronicle

 

Chennai: In the biggest seizure in Tamil Nadu, over 25 lakh pirated and obscene DVDs of Tamil, Telegu and English films, wrappers and printing machines worth over Rs 10 crore were confiscated from two areas in the city and five persons arrested, police said.

Acting on information, a team from the video piracy cell of CB-CID raided a godown on arterial Mount Road and seized over 25 lakh pirated DVDs, including new releases, over 3,000 obscene DVDs and five computer CPUs and arrested two persons.

They also raided a house in Royapettah area and seized over 1.55 lakh fake wrapper sheets, printing machines, lamination sheets and cutting machine worth over Rs 50 lakh and arrested three persons.

This is the biggest ever catch and seizure in the history of Tamil Nadu and the total worth is more than Rs 10 crore, a police press release said.

A special team has been formed to secure four others who are still at large, it said.

Four Ashland Residents Arrested in Marijuana Drug Trafficking Scheme - WSAZ-TV

ASHLAND, Ky. (WSAZ) -- Four people were arrested Friday in connection with a marijuana shipment from Arizona to an apartment building along the 800 block of Bath Avenue, Kentucky State Police say.

Kenneth Woods, Irvin Woods, Curtis Maynard and Ashly Leak, all of Ashland, were charged with drug trafficking.

The package contained 11 pounds of marijuana, troopers say.

Troopers say mail service has become a popular way of delivering drugs.

The U.S. Postal Service flagged the suspicious package, contacted Kentucky State Police, and then an inspector with the Postal Service delivered the package. Police then conducted a search of the apartment and found drugs.

The investigation is ongoing.

MEDINA, Saudi Arabia, Dec. 12 (UPI) -- A man arrested in the killing of two men in Saudi Arabia said he saw one victim smoking, and the other was unfit to lead mosque prayers.

The unnamed Saudi national, 32, admitted to police that Monday, on his way to a mosque in Medina, Saudi Arabia, he struck a Pakistani man on the head with a stick and then shot him because he was seen smoking a cigarette, and inside the mosque he fatally shot a Bangladeshi man waiting to lead group prayers, the Saudi newspaper al-Watan reported Wednesday, noting smoking is "haram," or forbidden by Islamic law.

The newspaper said the suspect is believed to suffer from mental problems.

After the shooting within the mosque the suspect locked the doors, prompting a four-hour siege by security forces. He was apprehended and taken away by police, the Bahraini newspaper Gulf News said Wednesday.

Drug arrests made during burglary call - Santa Maria Times

Police were called to a home in the 1500 block of South Curryer Street on Tuesday morning for a report of a burglary that turned out to not be the case, but arrests were still made.

Officers were called about 10 a.m. after a passing motorist spotted a man entering a house through an upstairs window, according to police.

Police determined that the man was not burglarizing the house, however, and that the man knew a resident of the home.

As a result of their investigation, police made several arrests for various violations.

Drug paraphernalia was found in the house but not drugs or weapons, police said.

"The house has been on the police radar for awhile," said Sgt. Dan Cohen.

Those arrested were Ramon Maldonado, 36, for warrants and probation violations; Alfred Plaza, 50, for warrants and a parole violation; Nancy Cerna, 29, for being under the influence of a controlled substance; and Taunya Gaitan, 46. They are all Santa Maria residents, police said.

Five arrested in drug task force operation in Golden Meadow - FOX 8 News WVUE-TV

Golden Meadow, La. – In a Tuesday night operation in Golden Meadow, the Lafourche Parish Drug Task Force and Golden Meadow police arrested five people.

Task force agents staked out Daffney Kiger's Golden Meadow home because she had outstanding warrants related to selling crack cocaine.

Agents pulled over a car leaving the house driven by Billy Coleman, who also had an outstanding crack cocaine distribution warrant.

They say they caught Coleman after a foot chase and also arrested his passenger, Javon Folse, on an outstanding domestic battery by strangulation warrant.

Back at Kiger's residence, Agents and Golden Meadow Police arrested Kiger for distribution of crack cocaine. Agents also booked two other men who were in the house, Larone Gray and Damoz Folse, on heroin and marijuana charges.

Investigators say a search of the house turned up a bag containing heroin, two bags of marijuana, a partially smoke cigar containing suspected marijuana, as well as an assortment of prescription drugs and paraphernalia.

Men arrested on suspicion of having drugs, burglary tools - Napa Valley Register

Two men were arrested Friday on suspicion of drug violations and possessing burglary tools, according to the Napa County Sheriff's Office.

At about 2 p.m., a sheriff's deputy stopped a vehicle in the 3500 block of Linda Vista Avenue after recognizing Julian Ramos, a man wanted on three warrants, the sheriff's office reported.

Ramos, 29, of Napa, had suspected methamphetamine on his person, Sgt. Craig Nickles said.

Sheriff's deputies found tools, including three pairs of bolt cutters, in the pickup truck, Nickles said. The driver, Jose Arturo Gonzalez, 34, of Napa, also had suspected methamphetamine in his possession, according to police.

An additional ounce of suspected methamphetamine was found when the two men were being transported to the Napa County jail, Nickles said.

Gonzalez and Ramos were booked on suspicion of possessing a controlled substance, possessing a controlled substance for sale, and possessing burglary tools, Nickles said. Gonzalez was also booked on suspicion of driving with a suspended license, he said.

SHALIMAR -  The Okaloosa County Multi-Agency Drug Task Force arrested two residents of a home on Poquito Road on Tuesday for selling drugs from the house, according to a news release from the Sheriff's Office.

The investigation of Jon King, 48, and Maggie King, 38, began in November 2011, their arrest reports state.

A search of their home about noon Tuesday found 5 pounds of marijuana in a bedroom safe, prescription bottles of different brands of Xanax, digital scales, large plastic bags with marijuana residue and other controlled substances that were sent off for analysis, according to their arrest reports.

Jon King told investigators he took the pain medication for his back, his arrest report said.

Both were charged with possession of marijuana with intent to distribute, possession of a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia.

They were taken to the Okaloosa County Jail. Bond had not been set as of Tuesday night.

Ex-husband pleads not guilty in violent murder of Redmond massage therapist - Redmond Reporter

Aleksandr Polak, charged in the stabbing death of his ex-wife on June 17, plead not guilty at his Wednesday morning arraignment.

Polak is accused of stabbing Nataliya Vabishchevich, 35, 72 times in the head, neck, hands, arms and chest in her Bellevue apartment while their teenage son was at school.

Vabishchevich was found dead by a coworker in the entryway of her Bellevue condominium in the 12700 block of NE 10th Place. Within the week Polak had been located and arrested in Los Angeles, en route to the Mexico border. Prosecutors requested that he be held without bail, citing flight risk and the violence of the crime.

"I kill people; I hurt people and don't mess with me," said Polak to a friend of Vabischevich on one occasion. Charging papers and friends' accounts indicate that there were early signs of domestic violence.

Sheffield murder: Bowling had violent history - The Star

During yesterday's sentencing hearing it emerged that killer Jonathan Bowling had a long criminal record.

Prosecutor Robert Smith QC told Mr Justice Nigel Teare the tattooed thug had a series of convictions for violence, brandishing weapons and public order offences.

Bowling sat looking straight forward, wearing a blue jumper, blue jeans and sporting a large tattoo on the right-hand side of his neck.

He was handcuffed in the glass-fronted dock and shackled to one of six prison officers.

His previous convictions included an attack on a jogger, committed when he was just 15 - which had left a man in hospital him with serious facial injuries similar to those suffered by Mr Greaves.

The 36-year-old runner had suffered a suspected broken cheekbone, cuts to his face and swollen eyes while out jogging along Burncross Road at Chapeltown.

The court was also told Bowling was convicted in his teens for brandishing a hammer when stopped by police officers, threatening a woman with a hammer, and headbutting a 48-year-old woman who complained because he was throwing snowballs at her windows.

In September 2008 he pinned a 14-year-old boy to the floor and punched and kicked him.

Ashley Foster was described as 'lightly convicted'.

When 15, he was cautioned for assaulting a relative.

Six sentenced to jail over sex video scandal in China - Global Times

Six people received jail terms ranging from 18 months to ten years in southwest China's Chongqing Municipality Friday for blackmailing government officials with secretly recorded sex videos.

Xiao Ye, Xu Sheqing, Yan Peng, Wang Jianjun, Zhao Hongxia and Tan Linling were charged with extortion and stood trial on June 20.

Xiao and Xu, who had conspired to lure officials into having sex with women and secretly recorded their encounters in order to blackmail them and to gain profits for their business, were sentenced to ten years and four years respectively, according to a Yubei district people's court ruling.

Yan and Wang, accomplices of Xiao, were sentenced to 3.5 years and 1.5 years with a 1.5-year-reprieve respectively, according to the ruling.

In February 2008, Xiao blackmailed Lei Zhengfu, former secretary of Chongqing's Beibei District Committee of the Communist Party of China, for 3 million yuan (485,539 US dollars).

Xiao also received 2 million yuan from Zhou Tianyun, former president of Chongqing Land Group, for the same reason in September 2009, according to the ruling.

Zhao, who was recorded having sex with Lei, was given a jail term of two years with a two-year reprieve.

Tan, who was recorded having sex with Zhou, was given a jail term of one-and-a-half years with an 18-month reprieve.

All their illegal earnings were confiscated, according to the ruling.

Xiao, Xu and Yan appealed to the court on Friday. Zhao, Tan and Wang said they would not appeal.

In a separate trial, Lei was sentenced to 13 years in jail for bribery on Friday, according to the Chongqing No. 1 Intermediate People's Court's ruling.

Cricket Australia are to investigate an obscene message on their official Twitter feed that went out to slap a controversial decision to adjudge England batsman Ian Bell not out on the third day of the Lord's Test on Saturday.

Australia thought they had dismissed Bell for just three runs before tea on the third day when Steve Smith claimed a catch at gully off Ryan Harris.

But, Bell believed there was some doubt as to whether the ball had reached Smith on the full and stood his ground.

The on-field umpires called for the third umpire Tony Hill to adjudicate and he decided there was too much uncertainty to award the catch.

Soon after, a crudely-phrased tweet appeared on CA's official feed, reading: "That decision sucked ass #bull****."

It was swiftly removed by CA's media team at Lord's, and an investigation has been launched.

"Apologies for the inappropriate tweet earlier regarding the Bell catch. It didn't emanate from CA's official Twitter presence at Lord's," read a message on the account.

"CA is currently investigating the matter."
