Customs and excise officers have foiled a smuggling attempt of 966 grams of ketamine and 97.9 grams crystal methamphetamine worth Rp 1.1 billion by a Chinese national at Soekarno-Hatta International Airport.

Customs office chief at the airport, Oza Olivia, said Thursday that the suspect, identified as JD, 24, had flown from Hong Kong on China Airlines and arrived at the airport Wednesday evening.

"Customs Tactical Unit [CTU] team members profiling new arrivals became suspicious of the man who had a different style of walking," she said.

The officers found nine plastic bags containing white powder inside the sneakers the man was wearing. Laboratory tests confirmed that the bags contained ketamine and crystal meth.

Both the suspect and the drug evidence were handed over to the airport police's drug unit for further case development.

The illegal spreading of drug violates Article 196 and 197 of the 2009 Law on health. Violators will likely face a punishment of up to 15 years imprisonment and Rp 1.5 billion (US$155,925) in fines.
