Peru arrests: British drug mules refused bail and face up to THREE YEARS in ... - Mirror.co.uk

The two British girls caught with £1.5million of cocaine will spend up to three years in a Peru prison before their trial.

Michaella McCollum Connolly and Melissa Reid, both 20, are accused of trying to smuggle cocaine out of Lima to Madrid.

Yesterday as they appeared in court they stared intently at a translator as they learned they were going to jail to await trial.

As they were formally charged with the promotion of drug trafficking and refused bail, both girls looks pale and drawn.

Their solicitor Peter Madden once again said they had been forced into a situation not of their making.

During the hearing, the judge demanded to know from the pair why they did not ask for help when they arrived at Lima airport.

Both women, who had been working in Ibiza, protested their innocence and said they were threatened by "someone anonymous".

Melissa, who is from Lenzie, near Glasgow, and Michaella, originally from Dungannon, Co Tyrone, have spent the last two weeks in custody.

And the girls were told they may have to wait up to three years for a trial.

The judge also accepted a prosecutor's recommendation that they serve no more than 15 years and no fewer than eight if found guilty.

Last night Mr Madden said the women's immediate worry was being separated from each other.

He said: "Their main concern at the moment is that they maybe separated and sent to different prisons.

"They didn't know each other before all this happened and now they've become best friends."

Sources say police want to make an example of them as they do not believe their story.
