A Ross lawyer was arrested twice in less than two weeks on suspicion of drug violations and having counterfeit money.

Deron Adam Kartoon, 46, was booked into county jail Thursday night on allegations of possession of marijuana for sale, drug possession, possession of counterfeit bills, possession of drug paraphernalia and bringing drugs into jail.

He was also booked on suspicion committing a felony while he was free on bail for a similar arrest last week.

Kartoon was released on bail Friday morning pending further review by the district attorney's office. He declined to comment when reached by phone.

The cases stem from an incident on Oct. 15, when the California Highway Patrol stopped a Toyota Camry traveling at nearly 100 mph on southbound Highway 101 near Tiburon Boulevard.

Police identified the driver as Kartoon and determined his license was suspended and he had no proof of insurance, said CHP Officer Erik Egide.

A search of the vehicle turned up a suspected drug pipe, suspected methamphetamine and medications for which Kartoon had no prescription, Egide said. Police also found an allegedly counterfeit $100 bill in the center console.

Police arrested Kartoon and had his car towed. He posted bail while prosecutors reviewed the police reports.

Meanwhile, the Marin County Major Crimes Task Force, the county's interagency drug unit, launched its own investigation. On Thursday, the task force served a search warrant on Kartoon's home on Sir Francis Drake Boulevard in Ross.

Investigators found numerous used drug pipes, a small amount of suspected meth, a scale and marijuana in 11 packets that appeared to be prepared for sale, said sheriff's Lt. Don Wick. The task force also seized five allegedly counterfeit bills, four $100s and a $50.

When Kartoon arrived at jail to be booked, deputies found suspected meth in one of his pants pockets, Wick said.

Kartoon has been a member of the state bar since 1991. He has no disciplinary record with the bar, but his license was suspended three times for failing to pay dues.

In 2010, Kartoon was charged with two counts of drug possession, but the case was dismissed the following year after his attorney, Douglas Horngrad, persuaded a judge the evidence should be suppressed.
