A Violet man was killed Saturday night when the Chevrolet Camaro he was riding in ran off the road, overturned and crashed into a home, authorities said. The Camaro was traveling at a high rate of speed when the crash occurred on Louisiana 39 in St. Bernard Parish, State Police said.
State Police said driver impairment is suspected.
Victor Major, 46, who had been in the front seat and was not wearing a seatbelt, was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash near milepost 36.3, State Police said.
The driver of the vehicle, Samuel Hampton Jr., 38, also of Violet, was transported to Interim LSU Hospital with moderate injuries. He was wearing a seatbelt.
Three children in the vehicle, ages 4, 10 and 11, were in the back seat. The children, who were wearing seatbelts, were also transported the hospital with moderate injuries, State Police said.
State Police said Hampton was driving at a high rate of speed when the vehicle ran off the road and into a ditch, where it overturned before striking the house. Neither State Police nor the St. Bernard Parish Sheriff's Office reported injuries to anyone inside the residence.
Blood was taken from Hampton and will be submitted to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab, State Police said. Criminal charges are pending at this time for Hampton, State Police said.
