Several People Killed In Weekend Accidents - Leesburg Today

An accident just before 1 a.m. this morning has left two people dead, adding to the number of fatalities from car accidents since Friday.

According to the Loudoun County Sheriff's Office, Mark Sgarlata, 52, of Ashburn, was driving eastbound on Ashburn Farm Parkway at 12:49 a.m. when he made at left turn into the Junction Plaza shopping center. Sgarlata's BMW hit a motorcycle carrying two people. The motorcycle had been driving westbound on Ashburn Farm Parkway.

Both the motorcycle's driver and passenger were killed in the crash. Sgarlata has been booked into the Loudoun County Adult Detention Center on DUI charges, but the investigation in ongoing and additional charges are possible.

One woman also died in the accident that closed Rt. 50 at Snickersville Turnpike for several hours. According to the sheriff's office, a vehicle traveling westbound on Rt. 50 crossed the double yellow line and hit a van carrying several people that was coming eastbound. A woman in the van died as a result of the accident. One passenger was flown from the scene with critical injuries and three others were transported by ground to the hospital.

Investigators are working with the Commonwealth's Attorney's Office and charges are possible against the westbound driver.

The names of the three victims in the accidents are being withheld pending familial notification, according to the sheriff's office.

The Virginia State Police also worked two accidents--one on Rt. 15 at Oatlands Friday and one on Evergreen Mills Road Saturday night. Two people reportedly were killed in the single vehicle Evergreen Mills Road accident after the car caught fire. More will be reported as it becomes available.
