A 19-year-old Los Angeles woman who prosecutors say drove her car over a curb and ran over two homeless people, killing them, was charged Tuesday with two counts of vehicular manslaughter, the district attorney's office announced.
Carmen Chavez, 19, who is currently being held on $100,000 bail, is expected to be arraigned Tuesday afternoon. Prosecutors say she was driving a 1989 Mercedes-Benz on Sunday when she jumped the curb, struck a wall and ran over Randall Milton and Teryl Sageser, both 51, who were lying on a sidewalk near the corner of 4th and Crocker streets.
Chavez is charged with two counts of vehicular manslaughter without gross negligence, and the complaint alleges that she was driving under the influence of alcohol and under the legal drinking age when the deaths occurred.
If convicted, Chavez faces a maximum sentence of four years and eight months in prison, prosecutors said.
