Two murders and two attempted murders as women attacked by husbands - Austrian Times

Two women were murdered by their husbands at the weekend and two other women beaten up by their partners.

The violence comes as a new report shows that one in four women are victims of domestic violence at home.

According to the report the situation is especially bad at Christmas when people put excessive hopes in the festive period. and often end up disappointed.

Maria Reichartzeder from the women's sanctuary Frauenhaus in Amstetten said: "There are always more calls at Christmas."

The Frauenhaus is organising a poster campaign this month to highlight the issue of domestic violence.

In Lower Austria there are six Frauenhäus locations and 10 advice centres with the latter open to anyone who is a victim of violence in the family.

The two murders over the weekend were both in Vienna, one in Brigittenau and the other in Ottakring.

At the murder in Brigittenau a 34-year-old suffocated his 36-year-old wife. He then drove with their 6-year-old daughter to his parents in Upper Austria and confessed what he had done.

He turned himself into police that morning.

A few hours later there was the second murder, this time in Ottakring when a row got out of control. A 44-year-old man attacked his wife with a knife leaving her badly injured. She died a short while later in hospital. The man's 20-year-old son was also stabbed in the stomach while protecting his mother and the daughter had a minor cut while also trying to save her mum.

In Lower Austria there were attempted murders - both by husband's against their wives.
