3 people killed in Springfield within one week - WWLP 22News

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - Many parents are shocked after 3 people were shot and killed withing one week in the City of Springfield.

Early Saturday morning 22-year-old John Alexander was shot in the head on Westminster Street. Last weekend, Adriana Bonet and Brandon Daniels were shot and killed in two separate incidents.

Chelan Brown's cousin Brandon Daniels was shot and killed on his birthday, September 21st. She said Daniels was, "A great father to his kids. He took care of his children. He was a great son."

Then, a week later, on September 28th, Brown lost another family member to gun violence. 22-year-old John Alexander was shot to death while sitting in his car. She said Alexander, "Never was disrespectful in any kind of way and just lit up the room."

Brown told 22News, "These were young people that were good people. They were good. They both had their problems. We've helped them both out, get back in school, deal with issues that were going on in their communities, but they were good people."

As the family prepares for two funerals, Brown said they are also determined to help stop gun violence in the city. An open forum with city leaders, anti-violence groups and families will be held on Wednesday.

Parents told 22News city officials and police officers cannot solve the crime issue on their own. They said the whole community needs to come together to reduce violence among young people.

Yolanda Cancel of Springfield said, "Maybe everybody should have that text-a-tip card. Put it in the mail. Make sure every resident has it. There are other things we can do to make things a lot better."

There have now been 15 homicides this year in the City of Springfield.

"It's everybody's job," said Cancel. "All of you have a stake in this; trying to get this information in to the high schools, middle schools, even elementary schools."

Wednesday's meeting will be held at the Spring of Hope Church of God in Christ, 35 Alden Street, in Springfield at 6:00PM.
