One arrested in Greenwich drug/gun bust, one still at large - The Advocate

Greenwich -- Police arrested a Stamford man following what they described as a botched drugs-for-gun deal outside an Old Greenwich office building Monday night.

One suspect was able to get away on foot, however, and despite an extensive police search that included cars from Greenwich and Stamford, officers on foot and multiple K-9 units, he was not captured.

At about 8:40 p.m., officers were dispatched to 1700 East Putnam Ave., near the Stamford border, to investigate a drug deal involving the exchange of a firearm.

Police were able to arrest Mark Pelazza, 24, of 1197 Hope St., Apt. 4, in Stamford, without incident. No one was hurt. No weapon and no drugs were recovered.

Police would not release further details.

Given the scene's proximity to Stamford and Interstate 95, Greenwich Police contacted both Stamford and State Police to assist in the search for the escaping suspect. K-9 units from the Greenwich, Stamford and Metro-North were all used during the subsequent investigation and search, to no avail.

A heavy police presence was reported at the eastern end of town, with multiple police cars in the parking lot at 1700 East Putnam, at the Bistro Latino restaurant, on Ferris Drive and at the BP gas station on the corner of the Post Road and Sound Beach Avenue.

Pelazza was charged with the sale of a firearm, conspiracy and criminal attempt and was held on $75,000 bond. He appeared in state Superior Court in Stamford on Tuesday morning.

Monday's arrest was not Pelazza's first run-in with the law or the Greenwich Police Department. A former Cos Cob resident, Pelazza has been arrested several times on a variety of shoplifting, petty theft and breach of peace charges in Greenwich and New Canaan, as well as for a 2011 assault in Norwalk, police said.
