7 people killed, 6 hurt in Ilocos truck-jeepney collision - Business Mirror

FOUR persons died on the spot, three were declared dead on arrival at the hospital and six others were seriously injured after a 10-wheeled truck collided with a passenger jeepney on the national highway in Barangay 18, Sarrat, Ilocos Norte, on Monday.

Chief Insp. Christopher Danao, Sarrat police chief, said the accident happened at around 7:30 in the morning.

"I cannot describe how gruesome the accident scene was. Four of the jeepney passengers were dead on the spot. I was informed that three of the nine passengers rushed to the Don Mariano Marcos Memorial Hospital were declared dead on arrival. Some of the injured victims are still in critical condition," Danao said.

Danao could not immediately give the name of the victims.

"Investigators are still getting the names of the victims. I will send it to you later," he told this reporter late Tuesday morning.

Initial investigation indicate that the passenger jeepney, which was loaded with students, was on the right lane of the highway when it was hit by an oncoming speeding 10-wheeled truck loaded with vegetables.

"Investigators were still checking all information to make sure kung sino ang may kasalanan sa dalawang driver. Let's wait for the official report," Danao said.

Just last week nine people were killed and nine others were injured when a Victory Liner bus loaded with more than 40 passengers collided with a fuel tanker on the Maharlika Highway at the Science City of Muñoz in Nueva Ecija.

Most of the fatalities were bus passengers, as well as a couple riding on a motorcycle that the bus hit before it collided with the tanker.

The tanker driver and the bus driver were also killed.
