Former beauty pageant contestant arrested in anti-drug-driving operation - South China Morning Post

A former beauty pageant contestant has been arrested on suspicion of possessing a dangerous drug, police said on Monday.

Cheung Wai-man, 24, was picked up by police in an anti-drug-driving operation on the Fanling Highway at about 11.15pm on Sunday, they said, after the delivery van in which she was riding was seen moving erratically.

Cheung was second runner-up in the 2010 Miss Chinese International contest, representing Toronto.

Cheung was a passenger in the van, and the driver, a man surnamed Law, 31, was understood to be her boyfriend.

Officers seized 13 packs of cannabis buds in a coin box in the van. The 54 grams of the drug had a street value estimated at HK$6,000, police said.

Cheung was arrested on suspicion of possessing a dangerous drug.

Officers suspected the driver had taken an illegal drug, and a roadside assessment was carried out to check his pupils for dilation and reactions.

"He failed the test and was then taken to Tai Po police station, where he was given the impairment test," the officer said.

After failing that test, the driver was taken to North District Hospital to have his blood tested for drugs. He was then arrested on suspicion of drug-driving and possession of an illegal drug.

The two were released on bail and required to report back to police in the middle of next month.

The amended Road Traffic Ordinance came into effect on March 15, allowing police to compel drivers to give urine and blood samples if they fail the impairment test. The law covers six illicit drugs: heroin, ketamine, methamphetamine, cannabis, cocaine and Ecstasy.

Offenders face up to three years in jail and a HK$25,000 fine. They may also have their driving licence disqualified for five years for the first offence and 10 years for the second.
