A MAN in his 60s remains in garda custody today after customs officers seized over half a million euro worth of cannabis.
The suspect was arrested at Rosslare Europort when the drugs were discovered concealed in the tyres of a truck which was part of a container-load arriving into Co Wexford on a ferry from France.
The drugs were discovered following a scan of the container by Revenue's mobile scanner.
Yesterday's bust was just the latest major success for customs officers based in Rosslare.
The arrested man who is from Co Kildare is being questioned at Wexford Garda Station. He is expected to be charged later.
In August, customs sniffer dog Alfie played his part in the seizure of 86,400 worth of cannabis at the busy port.
Trained springer spaniel Alfie, who joined the service recently, gave a positive indication for drugs.
The vehicle was then scanned by the customs X-ray scanner. The English driver was arrested. A consignment of 14.4kg of cannabis resin was found concealed in the car.
And just days later his canine colleague Ralph discovered 53kg of cannabis resin hidden in the boot of a car at a Revenue port checkpoint.
Officers examined the car with an X-ray scanner and found the drugs before arresting the Ukrainian driver.
In a separate operation, gardai from Carlow and Portlaoise searched a house at Kilminchey, Portlaoise, yesterday evening.
During the course of the search Gardai discovered ecstasy tablets, cannabis herb and cannabis resin with an estimated street value of 40,000.
During a follow-up search of a house in Graiguecullen, Co Carlow, gardai discovered, speed and cannabis herb with a street value of 6,000.
