Suspected drug pusher arrested - New Straits Times


PONTIAN: A suspected drug dealer was wounded after police opened fire when he attempted to attack the officers who tried to arrest him along Jalan Permas-Serkat here, recently.

The suspect, who is in his 30s, wounded his right cheek in the 12.35pm incident when he tried to attack the police party with a keris (traditional Malay dagger) following a short chase.

Pontian police chief Zahaliman Jamin said the police team had earlier tailed the suspect's Hyundai Accent car for about 14km when the latter sped off and rammed into a motorcycle before coming to a stop.

"The suspect then reversed into a police patrol car and injured a policemen before he fled on foot.

"Police then fired two warning shots before the suspect tried to attack the policemen with a keris.

"In their defence, the policemen then fired a shot which wounded the suspect's cheek. The suspect was then sent to the Pontian Hospital before he was transferred to the Sultanah Aminah Hospital for further treatment," he said recently.

Zahaliman said police also recovered 62.1g of heroin and about RM1,000 from the suspect's car.

"Checks revealed that the suspect was wanted by police in connection with investigations of a drug distribution network in the district that has been active for the past three years."

He added that the suspect is believed to be involved in pushing illicit drugs and other crimes.

Zahaliman said police are investigating the case as attempted murder, together with possession of a weapon besides crimes under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act.
