PLYMOUTH, Mass. (WHDH) -- A Plymouth woman posed at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Arlington Cemetery making an obscene gesture in front of some of America's most hallowed ground.
The picture posted on Lindsey Stone's Facebook page shocked most people who saw it.
"What is wrong with this world and people. I just don't understand," said one woman.
Since the picture surfaced, Lindsey Stone has been suspended from her job at a Hyannis living facility for adults with disabilities. Some of the residents are veterans.
Life Inc., where the Lindsey Stone works, issued a statement saying, "This photograph in no way reflects the opinions, thoughts, or feelings of the Life organization."
The picture was taken on a work trip to Arlington National cemetery.
"They were clowning around. She was reacting to the sign and not the place," said Peter Stone, Lindsey's father.
Peter Stone said his 30-year-old daughter didn't want to speak on camera but that she deeply regrets her actions and never saw the consequences coming.
"It was never intended to harm, she wants to apologize for her stupid lapse of judgment," Peter Stone said.
Peter Stone said the picture doesn't express his family's feelings.
Lindsey Stone and Jamie Schuh, the woman who took the photo, eventually issued an apology saying, "We sincerely apologize for all the pain we have caused by posting the picture in Washington, DC on Facebook. We never meant to disrespect any of the people nationwide who have served this country and defended our freedom so valiantly.
"It's kind of really disrespectful. I don't know why anyone would want to do that," another woman said.
Lindsey Stone will be off the job as long as her employer is still investigating. Her employer told 7News another coworker who is believed to have taken the picture was also suspended. Both are on unpaid leave.
