NAIROBI, Kenya Dec 21 At least 25 people were killed and several others injured in renewed clashes in the Tana Delta on Friday morning.
There were fears the toll could rise as more bodies were found in the bushes.
"There are 25 people from rival communities who have been killed," a police officer speaking on condition of anonymity from the area said.
The clashes occurred between members of the Orma and Pokomo communities after an order to surrender arms.
"There has been tension in the last two days over an order to have communities surrender arms. Some were feeling the government was lenient on one side," the source added.
The violence between the rival communities occurred at Kipao village.
Coast Provincial Police Chief Aggrey Adoli confirmed the incident saying; "There was an attack in Tana River, the exact number of the dead or injured people is not yet clear, please give us time to verify."
"We have officers on the ground," he emphasised.
The clashes come four months after more than 100 people were killed in a dispute between the Orma and Pokomo neighbours over grazing rights.
