Dayton police arrested a man on Friday who allegedly kept tens of thousands of dollars worth of drugs and cash in his car and the barbershop where he worked.
David Jackson, 36, was arrested on suspicion of drug trafficking, possession of drugs and illegal possession of a firearm. Investigators found more than $38,00 in cash and about $22,000 worth of heroin that they said belonged to Jackson. He was also in possession of smaller amounts of marijuana, crack cocaine and pills, according to police.
Police received a telephone report of suspicious individuals and perhaps drug activity behind the Top of the Line Barber and Beauty Shop at 2836 Salem Ave. Officers would eventually pull over a vehicle belonging to Jackson for illegal window tint as he drove toward Parkhill Drive. The vehicle was seen at the shop, according to the caller.
According to a Dayton police report, officers smelled marijuana inside the car and Jackson admitted to them that he sells it to make ends meet. Jackson was placed in handcuffs and questioned by police while investigators obtained a search warrant for the barber shop.
During a search of Jackson's booth and the basement at the barber shop, officers found more marijuana, heroin, a handgun and a digital scale.
Police Sgt. Paul Saunders said the barber shop rents space to barbers. Jackson rented a separate room with access to a back door and basement.
"The (confiscated) money would indicate a pretty high volume of frequency," Saunders said.
Lakita Good, who lives in the neighborhood, said some members of her family members regularly use the barber shop.
"It's really surprising to me," she said. "I never knew anything like that was going on over there."
It's unclear whether more arrests will be made, Saunders said. The owner of the business told police Jackson had been renting a rear room for $125 a week and has been there for the past four months.
Jackson is due in court on Monday afternoon.
