As new details about a Las Vegas firefighter accused of hiring a homeless man to kill his estranged wife emerge, one domestic violence advocacy group is requesting stricter laws in Nevada against offenders.
"October is the national domestic awareness month, and it's like a slap in our face that we've got a victim murdered by her husband," said Rebeca Ferreira, founder and executive director of Safe Faith United.
Ferreira was referring to Shauna Tiaffay, who according to an arrest report released Thursday, was murdered by her estranged husband, Las Vegas firefighter George Tiaffay and his accomplice Noel Stevens.
"Those two - they don't deserve to see the sunlight ever," Ferreira told FOX5.
The arrest report details how George Tiaffay paid Stevens, a homeless man living out of a tent, $600 to break into his wife's Summerlin apartment near Sahara and Interstate 215.
Detectives believe Stevens struck the 46-year-old woman with a hammer, killing her while her husband was at work.
The report states detectives first got a tip from a friend of Stevens that he was involved in the murder, and soon connected him to George Tiaffay through phone records.
According to the arrest report, once George Tiaffay realized detectives were investigating him, he drove to Summerlin Parkway and I-215 to try and commit suicide by driving over 76 miles an hour into a retaining wall.
George Tiaffay survived, but his injuries from the accident are clear in his mug shot.
While both suspects await trial, Ferreira said Nevada's domestic violence laws aren't doing enough to prevent such cases.
"Nevada ranked No. 1 among all the states with the highest incidents of domestic violence homicide … we are the embarrassment of the nation," Ferreira said.
Safe Faith United said it's currently working with state leaders to pass a law requiring domestic violence offenders to wear GPS tracking units.
