Syracuse, N.Y. — Six people were arrested in a major drug and weapons bust Monday — including one person who tried to escape by diving head-first from a second-floor window — Syracuse police said.

Defendant Mike Shutter, 38, landed on his head in the driveway below and was taken into custody and transported to Upstate University Hospital, where he was treated for broken vertebrae, possible skull fracture and multiple abrasions, police said. After being released from medical care, he was transported to the Onondaga County Justice Center and booked on numerous drug- and weapons-related charges.

The six defendants were arrested and charged with 44 felony and 27 misdemeanor charges and six violations related to various criminal possession of a weapon and criminal possession of a controlled substance, police said.

Along with Shutter, the others arrested were: Richard D. Brown, 42; Sharod Rutledge, 31; Ricardo Lane, 31; Tasha Brathwait, 26; and Habiba Cheeks, 28, police said. All the suspects are from Syracuse.

Sgt. Tom Connellan provided these additional details:

The Syracuse Police Department conducted an investigation that led to the execution of search warrants at 412 Bear St., Apt. 2.

The search recovered about 100 grams of crack cocaine, 300 grams of marijuana, about 300 grams of synthetic/designer drugs and almost $24,000 in cash, suspected to be proceeds from illegal drug sales. Detectives also found three handguns, one stolen from Georgia; three rifles, including an AK-47 style assault weapon along with multiple high-capacity magazines; a ballistic vest; and about 1,000 rounds of ammunition.

The search was executed Monday by members of the Syracuse Police Department's Special Investigations Division and Syracuse Police Department's SWAT team. The lead investigator for the case was Detective Scott Henderson.
