Over 2,000 people were also declared missing during the protest.
The number of "martyrs'' killed during the anti-Gadhafi revolution in Libya, which began on Feb. 17, 2011, is estimated at 55,017.
The estimate is based on records released by the ministry in charge of families of victims, the injured and those missing.
The Ministry's Technical Director of the organisation searching for those missing, Issam Zarik, made this known at a news conference in Tripoli.
Mr. Zarik said that it took a lot of time to obtain the actual figures of the dead and those missing because it involved detailed administrative and confirmation processes.
On those reported missing during the revolution, Mr. Zarik said figures received by the ministry from the different Libyan regions indicated that there were 2,516 cases of missing persons. He also said that the number of dead bodies exhumed from mass graves across the country is estimated at 437.
The Libyan civil war, also referred to as the Libyan revolution was a 2011 armed conflict in the North African state, fought between forces loyal to the late Colonel Mouammar Gadhafi and those seeking to oust his government.
